Trump: No Need ‘Right Now’ For Insurrection Act In Minneapolis

President Donald Trump told reporters before leaving for Palm Beach on Friday that he doesn’t currently see a reason to activate the Insurrection Act in Minneapolis — even as protests tied to federal immigration enforcement continue to roil the city. He added that if he thought it necessary, he would use the law, calling it “very powerful.”

Just a day earlier, Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 to send U.S. troops into Minneapolis after demonstrations erupted over the death of 37-year-old Renée Nicole Good, who was fatally shot by an ICE agent earlier this month — a killing that has ignited national outrage.

As The Hill reports:

“If the corrupt politicians of Minnesota don’t obey the law and stop the professional agitators and insurrectionists from attacking the Patriots of I.C.E., who are only trying to do their job, I will institute the INSURRECTION ACT, which many Presidents have done before me, and quickly put an end to the travesty that is taking place in that once great State,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

That post came hours after a federal officer shot and injured a man Wednesday evening in Minneapolis, sparking the latest wave of protests in the city.

Federal agents faced protesters late Thursday in north Minneapolis, deploying flash-bangs and tear gas. According to local reports, an explosive device struck a family’s van, and tear gas exposure sent six children — including a 6-month-old — to the hospital, even though the family was not involved in the unrest.

The Insurrection Act, a rarely used law that allows a president to deploy troops domestically, hasn’t been widely invoked in decades. Legal experts and Minnesota leaders say current conditions may not meet the high legal bar required, suggesting that any attempt to use it would almost certainly be challenged in court.
