President Donald Trump is open to partnering with Republican governors to address rising crime in Democrat-controlled cities, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed during a briefing with the Daily Caller.
The announcement comes amid the administration’s new law-and-order push, which began with a federal crackdown in Washington, D.C., and is now poised to expand into other troubled urban centers like Chicago, New York, and Memphis.
“The President wants to work with anyone across this country who wants to end these horrible policies and bring law and order to our streets,” Leavitt said, noting that Trump’s cooperation with D.C. officials had already led to measurable results.
D.C. Crackdown a Model for Future Action
Trump initiated the “D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force” via executive order in March, which took effect in early August. It included federalizing D.C. police, deploying the National Guard, and ramping up arrests of violent offenders, drug traffickers, and illegal aliens.
According to White House data shared with the Daily Caller, the operation has already resulted in:
- 2,177 total arrests
- 20 known gang members apprehended
- 7 missing children located
- 14 illegal aliens arrested in one night
- A fugitive wanted for assault with intent to kill captured
- Another suspect arrested on a warrant for armed carjacking
Leavitt described these numbers as evidence that the administration’s law enforcement initiatives are both effective and necessary, particularly in cities where local officials have failed to curb violence.
Targeting Blue Cities in Red States
When asked by White House correspondent Reagan Reese whether Trump would consider aiding red state governors with crime-plagued blue cities — such as Memphis, Tennessee — Leavitt was unequivocal.
“Yes, the President wants to work with anyone… who wants to end these horrible policies,” she stated.
She emphasized that most high-crime cities in the U.S. are Democrat-run, even within red states, pointing to examples like Jackson, Mississippi, which eliminated cash bail for nearly all misdemeanors in 2019 and Birmingham, Alabama, which declared itself a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants in 2017, despite the state’s official ban on such policies.
“These cities have acted as de facto sanctuaries for criminals and illegal aliens,” Leavitt said, citing lenient bail reform policies and non-cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
Responding to Democrat Claims on Crime
Leavitt also challenged Democrat talking points that crime is higher in red states overall.
“If you look at the list of the top 20 high crime cities in the United States, every single one — except one in Louisiana — is run by a Democrat,” she said.
She argued that crime statistics should be viewed at the city level, not the state level, to accurately reflect policy outcomes.
National Expansion of the Crime Crackdown?
While no specific cities have been officially announced for future federal interventions, Trump has publicly named Chicago and New York City as potential targets for expanded law enforcement operations. Both have experienced a rise in violent crime and repeat offender arrests under progressive leadership.
The administration’s approach appears to mirror Operation Legend, the 2020 Trump initiative that partnered federal agencies with local law enforcement to fight violent crime in cities like Kansas City, Chicago, and Albuquerque.
Political Implications
The renewed focus on law and order is a cornerstone of Trump’s second term agenda, as he positions himself as a champion of public safety amid concerns over rising urban crime. It also contrasts with Democratic messaging, which has generally focused on criminal justice reform, bail reform, and policing oversight.
