Nashville hitmaker helped shape modern country with a long list of classics…
Country music songwriter Jim McBride, a behind-the-scenes force responsible for some of the genre’s most enduring hits, has died. He was 78.
McBride passed away Jan. 6, 2026. His death was described as unexpected following a fall.
McBride built a legendary career in Nashville as a songwriter whose work helped define modern country music. He was a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and spent decades writing songs recorded by many of the genre’s biggest stars.
He was best known for his collaborations with Alan Jackson. McBride co-wrote several of Jackson’s signature songs, including “Chattahoochee” and “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow,” tracks that became staples of country radio and helped launch Jackson’s career in the 1990s.

His ability to write songs that felt both personal and widely relatable made his work a natural fit for performers with very different styles and audiences.
McBride earned numerous honors for his songwriting. His work won a CMA Song of the Year award and garnered multiple American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) awards, reflecting both commercial success and peer recognition.
He was inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 1995 and later into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017, formal acknowledgments of his lasting influence on the genre.

Many of McBride’s songs topped the charts or became long-running favorites on country radio, with more than 80 major artists recording his work. Long after their release, they continue to be played, covered, and cited as examples of strong, straightforward country songwriting.
From icons like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, George Jones, and Willie Nelson to modern hitmakers including Toby Keith, Reba McEntire, Randy Travis, and Lonestar, his body of work helped shape generations of artists and continues to influence songwriters in country music today.
