Actor and filmmaker Sean Penn is reportedly developing a feature film based on January 6, 2021, with Bradley Cooper in discussions to take a leading role.
According to Deadline, the project is based on an original script written by Penn and will follow a police officer who becomes caught in the chaos surrounding the United States Capitol. The film is said to be inspired by the experiences of a real law enforcement officer, though the individual’s identity has not been publicly disclosed.
Cooper is rumored to be in talks to star in the project, but no casting agreement has been finalized.
The project is being developed at Warner Bros. and is described as a story about “an unexpected friendship,” with production expected to begin in mid-2027. The studio connection adds another layer of political intrigue to the announcement, which comes just days after the Justice Department said it would not challenge Paramount Skydance’s proposed $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
Industry reports describe the film as portraying the officer as a central heroic figure amid the turmoil of January 6. While the specific inspiration for the character has not been officially confirmed, some insiders have speculated that the story may draw from the experiences of former Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police officer Michael Fanone.
Fanone became one of the most prominent law enforcement voices following the event, testifying before Congress and later publishing the memoir Hold the Line. He also emerged as a frequent critic of President Donald Trump and many of the narratives surrounding the events of January 6.
Penn has long been an outspoken political activist and vocal opponent of Trump. During the House January 6 Committee hearings in 2022, the actor attended proceedings in Washington, D.C., where he was seen speaking with Fanone and other attendees. At the time, Penn described himself as attending the hearings as “just another citizen.”
The Oscar-winning actor has repeatedly drawn attention for his comments about Trump over the years. Following Trump’s departure from office, Penn suggested that he should take cyanide. He has also compared Trump to authoritarian leaders, described him as a “demagogue,” and blamed him for hundreds of thousands of deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Penn has likewise criticized Republican leaders broadly, once referring to the GOP as “the party of Putin.”
The project marks Penn’s latest effort to explore contemporary political themes through film. His involvement has already sparked debate among critics who argue that Hollywood’s treatment of January 6 often reflects a partisan perspective rather than a broader examination of the event and its political aftermath.
No release date has been announced, and production details remain limited as development continues.
