American tennis star Amanda Anisimova shut down a politically loaded question during a press conference at the 2026 Australian Open, refusing to be baited into criticizing the United States while discussing her career.
The exchange began when a reporter shifted the focus away from tennis and toward American politics, asking Anisimova how it feels to compete under the American flag “right now,” referencing the current political climate.
“I mean I was born in America so I’m always proud to represent my country,” Anisimova replied. “And yeah, a lot of us are doing really well. It’s great to see a lot of great athletes on the women’s side, on the men’s side, so yeah, I feel like we’re all doing a great job representing ourselves.”
Unsatisfied with the answer, the reporter pressed further, asking whether events in the U.S. over the past year complicated her feelings about representing the country.
Anisimova declined to engage, cutting off the line of questioning with a brief but firm response.
“I don’t think that’s relevant,” she said.
The moment quickly drew attention online, with many praising Anisimova for redirecting the conversation back to sport and refusing to wade into partisan commentary during a tennis press conference.
Anisimova enters the 2026 season after a breakout year in 2025. She reached a career-high world No. 3 ranking in January 2026, advanced to back-to-back Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, and captured two WTA 1000 titles in Doha and Beijing.
The same reporter, Owen Lewis—who writes for outlets including The Defector, The Guardian, The Athletic, and The Second Serve—posed similar questions to several other American players at the tournament. Taylor Fritz declined to answer, saying any response would likely be taken out of context and that he preferred to focus on tennis. Jessica Pegula offered a more measured reply, saying she hoped Americans could come together but ultimately avoided fully engaging with the question, while Coco Gauff referenced her previous public comments and expressed fatigue as a black woman over online discourse surrounding the treatment of “marginalized people.”

Lewis has since faced criticism online for attempting to inject political debates into post-match press conferences at an international sporting event, with critics arguing the questions were designed to provoke controversy rather than elicit insight into the athletes’ performances.

Sports are sports. Politics is politics.
In a non-sports environment, a person may ( in this, a free country ) say what they wish to.
But in the sports ‘arena’, it is definitely best to just keep a closed mouth.
Besides … a lib reporter has one objective. And that is to cause trouble.
Put another way; a person’s own political beliefs are just that. They have that right.
Their own right of belief, but not ‘ammunition’ to be used by some anti-American muckraker!
To remain a person who is respected for their ability in their sport, it is always best to talk only about the sport that they are, at that time, involved in.
Being a athlete does not make anyone a professional in politics.
