The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending unauthorized U.S. military involvement in Iran, marking the most significant congressional challenge yet to President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) invokes the 1973 War Powers Resolution and would require the administration to obtain explicit authorization from Congress before continuing hostilities against Iran, except in cases involving an imminent threat to the United States. The vote followed months of growing bipartisan concern over a conflict that began in.

MONDAY PDB – Between the GOP’s strong push and popular backlash against wokeness, things may be starting to turn around with our increasingly woke military.

EXCELLENT – Lawmakers eye ending affirmative action at military academies. Thursday’s Supreme Court decision which ended the use of affirmative action in college admissions contained a carve out for military service academies, but a key Senate Republican wants to eliminate it there too.

MORE STANDARDS, LESS WOKE – CMSAF Bass explains what led to her recent ‘standards’ memo to Airmen. When the Air Force’s top enlisted leader wrote an open letter to Airmen focusing on professional standards in June, the memo drew mixed reactions.

BE LESS WOKE, LESS NEED FOR MORE WORK – Navy cancels plan to force recruiters to work six days a week.

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – Here’s a roundup of today’s other top defense stories from national security expert PAUL CRESPO.

Not the President’s Daily Brief, but almost as good – PAUL’S DAILY BRIEFING – the PDB:

NATIONAL SECURITY

WAR WITH CHINA IS COMING – US military should speed up efforts to modernize its forces, top American general says. Gen. Mark Milley, who will retire as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in three months, said Friday that the U.S. military should pick up the pace on modernizing its forces so it will be able to withstand the changing conditions of future battles.

BRING BACK THE DRAFT? – What an all-volunteer force looks like today 50 years after America ditched the draft. Despite 50 years of an All-Volunteer Force, fear of conscription remains just below the surface as Americans consider the role of the U.S. military and their relationship to it.

HOMELAND SECURITY

GET RID OF TIKTOK – House, Senate China hawks concerned Biden will let TikTok stay in the US. Key Republican lawmakers in the House and Senate warned that tweaked language in a new Commerce Department rule could lay the groundwork for TikTok’s proposal to store U.S. users’ data in the country.

NOT GOOD – Man wanted on Jan. 6 charges arrested with weapons near Obama DC home. A man armed with explosive materials and weapons was arrested Thursday in the Washington neighborhood where former President Barack Obama lives.

CHINA THREAT

CONCERNING – The state of the US Navy as China builds up its naval force and threatens Taiwan. The U.S. Navy helped secure victory in two world wars and the Cold War. Today the Navy remains a formidable fighting force, but even officers within the service have questioned its readiness.

Taiwan military holds live fire drills on strategic southern coast. Taiwan’s military fired missiles Monday from highly mobile armored cars to destroy targets close to shore in a simulation of repelling invading forces.

TRYING THE CARROT AS WELL AS STICK – Chinese Navy stops in Manila as part of South China Sea ‘goodwill’ tour. A Chinese training ship made a port call where locals could tour the ship. This comes amid increased tensions in the South China Sea.

Chinese navy makes rare foray into West Africa with Nigeria visit. A naval fleet of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) led by the destroyer Nanning arrived in Nigeria on Sunday for a rare visit by the Chinese military to Africa’s Atlantic coast.

RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Ukraine says Putin is planning a nuclear disaster. These people live nearby. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has been in danger throughout the conflict, but the risks of a meltdown rose sharply with the destruction of the Kakhovka dam.

Russia launches the first drone strike on Kyiv in 12 days. The head of the Kyiv city administration said Sunday that all the Iranian-made Shahed exploding drones were detected and shot down. UNLIKELY.

FOR WAGNER GROUP? – Satellite photos suggest Belarus is building military camp site. The satellite images suggest that dozens of tents were erected at a former military base about 142 miles north of Ukraine’s border.

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 495. Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister said the conflict situation was “complicated.” Ukrainian troops were advancing with “partial success” on the southern flank of Bakhmut in the east and in the south. However, Russian troops were making advances elsewhere in eastern Ukraine amid “fierce fighting.”

US poised to give Ukraine controversial cluster bombs. The Biden administration is pushing lawmakers and allies to put aside human rights concerns as regular ammunition stocks are depleted.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

US flies nuclear-capable bombers in new show of force to North Korea. This, days after the North staged massive anti-U.S. rallies in its capital.

SPACE THREAT

Uniforms? Check. Motto? Check. Now the Space Force needs an identity. Three years after it was established under Donald Trump as the sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, the U.S. Space Force is working to define its mission.

Space Force chief seeks to ‘shift mindset’ to defend Joint Force on the ground. “While important, a narrow focus on protecting space capabilities disregards how U.S. strategic competitors are preparing to use their own space capabilities to find, target, and attack forces operating in the terrestrial domains,” says Space Force chief.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY

America’s front line of missile defense is straining under the demand of global threats. The US Army’s air defense units are among the most overworked in the US military, manning missile systems across the globe to provide around-the-clock deterrence against adversaries including North Korea, China, Iran and Russia.

CAREFUL WITH UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES – Sen. JD Vance endorses the US military’s going after drug cartels in Mexico. The Republican from Ohio said fentanyl’s increasing popularity and Mexico’s apparent inability to quash the illicit narcotics trade necessitates his proposal.

PREPARING FOR WAR – Israel to buy more F-35 fighter jets from US. Deal expands fleet by 50% and deepens partnership. Israel will buy 25 F-35 aircraft from the United States, the Israeli Defense Ministry announced Sunday.

Jenin: Israeli military launches major operation in West Bank city. There have been Israeli drone strikes and gun battles between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in Jenin, after Israel launched a major military operation in the occupied West Bank.

BIDEN AFGHAN FIASCO

YOU THINK?? – State Dept: We failed to plan or respond fast enough to Afghan chaos. The review repeatedly blames the administrations of both Trump and Biden for their efforts before and after the August 2021 departure of U.S. forces from Kabul. MOSTLY BIDEN – HE PULLED THE TRIGGER ON THE RETREAT OVER MILITARY OBJECTIONS.

US MILITARY

TRANSFORMING THE MARINES FOR WAR WITH CHINA – US Marine Corps wants to further speed up Force Design overhaul plans. The future commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps wants to accelerate the service’s implementation of its Force Design 2030 modernization effort.
