Biden Admin Weary Of Assurances As Israel Readies Military Action Against Iran

According to The New York Times, Israeli officials have indicated that the Israeli Air Force is preparing for potential strikes against a broad array of military targets within Iran. The targets could include missile and drone launch sites, storage and production facilities, military bases and significant government buildings. Tuesday’s developments come as tensions in the region continue to rise following recent escalations. Although Israeli officials have assured the United States that they will not target Iran’s underground nuclear enrichment sites, there are reports that suggest Israeli forces may strike nuclear research laboratories that are not directly involved in uranium enrichment:

While no final decision is believed to have been made, an Israeli retaliation could still be large in scale, possibly prompting Iran to continue the cycle of attacks. And the officials said that Israel’s assurances related only to its next attack — meaning that it could still pursue more ambitious targets in future rounds of fighting with Iran.

As Iran awaits Israel’s counterstrikes, its senior military commanders are intensifying their threatening rhetoric. The deputy commander in chief of the Quds Forces, Gen. Ali Fadavi, told reporters at a funeral for a slain Quds forces general on Tuesday that Iran could “eliminate all Zionists” if it so decided.

For decades, Iran has sought Israel’s destruction while Israel has pushed to collapse the Iranian regime, leading to a decades-long shadow war in which each side has secretly attacked the other’s interests and supported the other’s enemies.

That covert war has broken out into the open in recent months, partly because of Israel’s war with Hamas, an ally and proxy of Iran. Hamas unsuccessfully tried to persuade Iran to participate in the attack on Israel last October that prompted Israel to invade Gaza, according to documents obtained by The Times, but Iran has supported Hamas with funds and diplomatic support.

U.S. Officials Express Doubts Over Israeli Assurances

Multiple officials within the Biden-Harris administration told the Associated Press that while Israel has provided assurances it will refrain from attacking Iranian oil and nuclear facilities, these guarantees are not considered “ironclad.” U.S. officials expressed concerns that the situation could change, citing their opinions on Israel’s track record in upholding previous assurances.

Biden Administration Warns of Potential Arms Suspension

In related developments, the Biden administration issued a warning to Israeli leaders on Monday, suggesting that military aid could be suspended unless the humanitarian situation in Gaza improves within 30 days. Israel, however, has pushed back against these claims, stating that it works daily to ensure that Gaza’s food supply remains sufficient.

Netanyahu Discusses Strike Plans at Intelligence Base

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was reported to have visited a military intelligence base in the suburbs of Tel Aviv earlier today. During the visit, discussions were held regarding the scope, targets and timing of the planned retaliatory strike on Iran.

Netanyahu’s government remains under intense scrutiny from progressives both in the U.S. and internationally as it fights enemies on multiple fronts.
