ANALYSIS – Joe Biden appears to be panicking over the downturn in U.S.-China relations (and lack of high-level communication) on his watch.
While the belligerent communist regime in Beijing is the cause of the increasingly bad blood, Biden thinks making nice with the Chinese Communists (CHICOM) is the solution.
As part of Biden's attempt to improve the situation, he reportedly sent his potentially compromised CIA director, William Burns, to Beijing last month on a clandestine mission.
This according to the Financial Times (FT), citing five anonymous officials.
Soon after the reported Burns trip, Biden, who is daily being accused of being compromised by the CHICOM, said he expected an imminent “thaw” in relations without providing any more information.
With China ramping up threats and aggression towards neighbors, especially Taiwan, it is hard to see how a contrived thaw would benefit anyone but Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Yet, the CIA director may himself be vulnerable to Chinese political influence as he previously led a prominent Washington-based think tank employing undisclosed Chinese Communist Party (CCP) members.
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace also has received large amounts of China-linked funding over the years and organized a China trip for nearly a dozen congressional staffers to meet with communist party operatives and leaders of Chinese front groups.
Burns claimed during his CIA Senate confirmation hearings that he ended the preferential relations Carnegie had with China after he took over the think tank in 2015.
But the Washington Examiner notes that:
Burns welcomed Chinese businessman Zhang Yichen, CEO of CITIC Consulting, to join the think tank's board of trustees in 2016. Zhang is linked to organizations with Chinese Communist Party ties, and his firm donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Carnegie, helping fund the Beijing-based Carnegie-Tsinghua Center, which partners with one of China's top technological universities, Tsinghua University.
So his explanations may ring a bit hollow.
Team Biden has been trying to resurrect a trip to China that Secretary of State Antony Blinken abruptly canceled over the notorious Chinese spy balloon incident back in February, but Beijing has so far refused to reschedule.
Discovery of the spy balloon that transited across the entire continental U.S. vacuuming up data on sensitive military sites effectively shut down Biden's plan to engage in a diplomatic détente with Beijing.
Burns' secret trip was the highest-level visit to China by a U.S. official during the Biden administration. According to FT's sources, Burns may have met with Chinese intelligence officials (his “counterparts”).
But this isn't Burns' first rodeo.
Biden has asked the CIA director to conduct delicate missions on several occasions. Burns, a former U.S. ambassador, traveled to Moscow in November 2021 to warn Russian officials not to invade Ukraine.
That didn't turn out too well.
He also reportedly communicated Team Biden's cowardly opposition to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan in August which angered China.
Equally concerning, Burns led Team Obama's secretive “backchannel” during the lead-up to the infamous Iran nuclear deal.
That in itself would make Burns suspect in my book.

CCP is providing guidance to Biden Admin in its drive to shut down US “hate groups” like the RNC. CCP has much more experience in creating domestic harmony by shutting down dissenters.
The first thing this country needs to do is get back to making our own medical drugs, and electronic parts for our military equipment. If not we will eventually be in a position to be ruled over by the Chinese. How this ever happened doesn’t matter, just get it stopped. It really looks like that at some time in the near future we will have a war with China, and unless we can stand on our own, we will be defeated.
