ANALYSIS – With so many critical American national interests under threat in the world, Joe Biden, and his band of woke warriors continue to prioritize imposing a far-left ideology on our nation's diplomats.
While the Pentagon budget under Biden has been shrinking (after inflation) three years running, the State Department (State) is seeing a three yearlong expansion of funding for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts in its own ranks. The 2024 budget dedicated specifically to push DEI at State disclosed to Congress now tops out at $83 million. But the real number is likely far greater.
I previously wrote about how the State Department is imposing woke policies on our friends and allies worldwide, with a special envoy, but don't worry, our diplomatic service is forcing this ideology on its own employees just as aggressively.
Since Biden came to office in 2021, he has placed race, gender and sexual identity at core of all his policies and programs.
The Daily Wire noted that: “The State Department recently reaffirmed its commitment to embed “equity” throughout the agency, and within the foreign policymaking process, in a new Equity Action Plan which claims that ‘inequity is a national security challenge with global consequences.'”
And Biden has placed our taxpayer money where his mouth is, even if his team tries to hide a lot of it.
In 2021, State pledged an annual $10 million grant to the Global Equality Fund. This group boasts that it provides “critical resources to civil society organizations (CSOs) and human rights defenders, including those working to increase the visibility and empowerment of queer women, transgender, intersex people, and members of other marginalized LGBTQI+ communities.”
But the real money being spent by State was the eye-popping $2.6 billion taxpayer dollars requested in 2023 to “advance gender equity and equality across a broad range of sectors.” That's a fully launched super aircraft carrier right there. As The Daily Wire reports about Biden's State Department's DEI funding:
All indications are that the Biden administration will only step up its spending on DEI. The agency has requested up to $83 million to push DEI in fiscal year 2024, threatening to bring the official 3-year total to $160 million.
“The Budget includes up to $83.3 million for continued expansion of programs to foster diversity and inclusion to further support the President's Executive Orders,” a fiscal year 2024 budget justification reads.
The appendix provided by the administration to Congress says that it failed to monitor how much was spent on DEI in 2021, making a determination on the total amount spent under Biden impossible.
That last line is the bigger problem. These figures are based on a limited definition of DEI and grossly undercount the amount being spent by State on these efforts.
Going well beyond simply ensuring federal “non-discrimination” standards are met, the department has instead pushed far more extreme efforts both at home and abroad at a cost far greater than the amount disclosed to Congress.
As one example, The Wire adds, “an undisclosed amount of “central funds” are used to pay for 12 full-time employees in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (Acting Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Constance Mayer enjoys an annual salary of nearly $180,000).” We are not told what the combined salaries of the full team amounts to. But you do the math.
Still, the largest DEI-related request by State in 2024 for internal DEI spending is hidden among other expenses, obscuring the true sum. A full $435 million was requested by the State Department for “central support,” a request that “includes funding for IT; office space, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility activities.”
The fact is DEI is like a virus spreading throughout our State Department and other agencies.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told the Wire: “Now, foreign and civil service officers must pledge allegiance or else risk not being promoted.”
McCaul's provision required the State Department to tell Congress how much it was spending on DEI. But they are only disclosing what they want to disclose.
Whatever the true sum, McCaul told The Daily Wire that the massive spending on DEI sends the message to every employee at State that they better fall in line behind the ideology.
