Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledged Wednesday that he threatened to “kick ass” during a heated confrontation last year, while firmly denying reports that he threatened to punch the now-acting Director of National Intelligence “in the face.”
The unusual exchange emerged during a Senate Finance Committee hearing, where Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) pressed Bessent about reports surrounding a confrontation between the two Trump administration officials during the summer of 2025.
According to Bessent, one key detail in the widely circulated account was inaccurate.

ANALYSIS – Lots more dead Gazans. Hamas launched a murderous terror rampage on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 Israeli men, women and children, knowing full well Israel had to respond with massive force.
Hamas’ terror leaders believed their fortified underground tunnel network and bunkers would protect them. Especially with the entire civilian population of Gaza above them as human shields. (RELATED: Harvard Students Shockingly Sign Thank You Card To Hamas)
The civilian deaths were “necessary sacrifices” that will be used to the terrorists’ advantage against Israel. The more dead Palestinians, the greater the pressure on Israel to agree to a truce.
And to a great extent they still believe that. More specifically, leaked messages from Yahya Sinwar, the Islamist Hamas military chief, say that.
“We have the Israelis right where we want them,” Sinwar said in a recent message to Hamas negotiators engaging with Qatari and Egyptian officials, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The WSJ adds:
In dozens of messages—reviewed by The Wall Street Journal—that Sinwar has transmitted to cease-fire negotiators, Hamas compatriots outside Gaza and others, he’s shown a cold disregard for human life and made clear he believes Israel has more to lose from the war than Hamas. The messages were shared by multiple people with differing views of Sinwar.
The outlet adds: “In one message to Hamas leaders in Doha, Sinwar cited civilian losses in national-liberation conflicts in places such as Algeria, where hundreds of thousands of people died fighting for independence from France, saying, ‘these are necessary sacrifices.’”
The Journal continues:
In an April 11 letter to Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh after three of Haniyeh’s adult sons were killed by an Israeli airstrike, Sinwar wrote that their deaths and those of other Palestinians would “infuse life into the veins of this nation, prompting it to rise to its glory and honor.”
Commenting on the WSJ report, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on X: “Sinwar profits off the deaths of Gazan civilians, calling them “necessary sacrifices” in order to urge international pressure on Israel’s efforts to eliminate his terrorist organization.”
Based on Sinwar’s numerous prior statements, and the recent leaked messages, the WSJ explains: “His ultimate goal appears to be to win a permanent cease-fire that allows Hamas to declare a historic victory by outlasting Israel and claim leadership of the Palestinian national cause.” (RELATED: Which Democrat Lawmaker Is Apologizing After Endorsing Hamas Terrorism?)
“Even without a lasting truce,” the Journal adds, “Sinwar believes Netanyahu has few options other than occupying Gaza and getting bogged down fighting a Hamas-led insurgency for months or years.”
This can only mean many thousands more dead Gazans, or “necessary sacrifices,” as Sinwar calls them.
Six years ago, when he first became leader in the Gaza Strip, Sinwar argued that Hamas might lose a war with Israel, but it would cause an Israeli occupation of more than two million Palestinians. That is what he wants. And it is what he is causing.
This is why ALL the dead in this horrible war are on Sinwar, and Hamas.
