Iran Responds to Allegations It Tried to Assassinate Fmr White House Official

The DOJ charged Shahram Poursafi, of Tehran, with plotting Bolton's murder in retaliation for the assassination of then-Iranian commander . As European network Euractiv reports:

rejected the US charges as “baseless”.

“Iran strongly warns against any action against Iranian citizens under the pretext of these ridiculous and baseless accusations,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said, according to Iranian media.

The US allegation came as Iran weighs a proposed agreement in Vienna talks to revive the 2015 agreement that aims to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

For months Tehran has held up the deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), demanding that the remove its official designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a sponsor of .

The U.S. State Department designated Iran a state sponsor of terrorism in 1984. Under the Trump administration, the State Department added the IRGC to the official list of foreign terrorist organizations.
