Public Criticism Mounts Over Senator’s Reaction To Iran Blockade Report

WASHINGTON — Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) faced sharp criticism after appearing to react positively to a disputed report suggesting Iranian vessels had bypassed a U.S. naval blockade — a claim later denied by the Pentagon.

The controversy began after maritime publication Lloyd’s List reported that more than two dozen Iranian-linked “shadow vessels” had allegedly slipped through the U.S.-enforced blockade. Murphy responded to the report with a brief social media post calling it “awesome,” drawing immediate backlash.

Defense officials quickly pushed back. A Pentagon spokesperson said there was no evidence that Iranian vessels had successfully breached the blockade, contradicting the initial report.

The U.S. blockade took effect Monday, April 13. The operation involves surface combatants representing roughly 15% of the deployed U.S. Navy fleet, along with thousands of personnel.

Political Reaction

Murphy, who has been mentioned as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, drew withering fire from opponents who said his remarks appeared to celebrate a possible failure of U.S. military operations.

He has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s Iran strategy, repeatedly calling the policy dangerous and warning it could escalate into a broader conflict.

Supporters on X argued that his reaction may have been intended to highlight perceived flaws in U.S. policy rather than endorse Iran.

Broader Context

Murphy, 52, has recently used international forums and social media to sharply criticize U.S. military involvement in Iran, as well as domestic policy.

During a speech at the Global Progressive Mobilisation in Barcelona, Spain, over the weekend, the Connecticut Democrat said the U.S. faces “the most significant threat to American democracy since the Civil War.”

He argued the country is in the middle of a “totalitarian takeover” and urged global progressives to “beat back the forces of fascism.”

The senator’s office has not provided additional clarification on his comment.

Face it folks. The Democrat Communist Party wants Americans dead, Amnesty for their illegal Alien Invader voters and the destruction of God Given Freedom on the planet. Marxism is their religion and we will not ever stand for it. Murphy is the prime example of the enemy within. We will have to deal with this at the ballot box. This time, an honest ballot box. That’s something we have not had in Decades.
