Russia now says it will reassess its negotiating position and ceasefire terms after alleging that Ukrainian drones targeted President Vladimir Putin’s fortress-like residence near Novgorod on Monday, injecting new tension into already fragile peace talks.
Ukraine vehemently denies the claim, calling it a manufactured pretext intended to stall negotiations and justify further Russian attacks.
Russian officials say dozens of Ukrainian drones attempted to strike Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region. According to Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, all drones were intercepted, and no damage or injuries were reported.

Trump says that he’s angry after Putin told him that Ukraine sent drones to attack his presidential residence in the Novgorod region.

The Kremlin described the alleged incident as an act of “state terrorism” and said it occurred at a sensitive moment in ongoing peace talks. No independent evidence confirming the attack or Ukraine’s involvement has been publicly verified.
Moscow went so far as to claim that Trump was “literally outraged” with Ukraine after a phone call with Putin, adding that the purported attack had prompted Russia to revisit previously discussed frameworks for a ceasefire.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin first raised the issue with Trump, telling him that Russian officials would review “a number of agreements reached at the previous stage” of negotiations in light of the incident.
Previously discussed ceasefire terms and confidence-building measures may now be subject to revision, though Ushakov did not specify what changes Moscow might seek.
Ukrainian officials strongly denied any involvement and accused Russia of using the allegation to derail talks.
President Volodymyr Zelensky called the claim a “complete fabrication” and “typical Russian lies,” arguing it was intended to provide cover for future strikes on Ukrainian cities and government targets.

Kyiv maintains that it targets only legitimate military objectives and says Moscow is deliberately creating new obstacles to avoid committing to a meaningful ceasefire.
The dispute comes as a U.S.-mediated proposal had shown signs of progress. Talks have included discussions of security guarantees and conditional ceasefire arrangements.
Ukraine and its Western backers have pushed for an immediate, comprehensive ceasefire. By contrast, Russia has consistently sought conditions or revisions before agreeing to any pause in fighting.
It remains unclear what specific changes Russia may seek in future ceasefire or peace proposals in response to the allegation.
Bottom Line
Russia is citing an alleged — and unverified — Ukrainian attack on President Putin’s residence as a reason to reconsider its negotiation posture.
Kyiv denies the claim and argues that Moscow is exploiting the accusation to drag out talks and avoid real concessions, deepening skepticism about whether a diplomatic pause in the war is achievable nearly four years after Putin launched the invasion.
