Should US Create A ‘Cyber Force’ Armed Service Branch?

TUESDAY – A Cyber Force? Senate proposes study with lessons learned from Space Force. One provision in the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act bill would task the Pentagon with studying the possibility of an independent Cyber Force – using lessons from the Space Force.

There are arguments pro and con.

If pursued, this would create a new, 7th branch of military service.

THREAT – UKRAINE WAR

Russia blames Ukraine for attack on key Crimea military supply bridge. Vehicle traffic on the single bridge that links Russia to Moscow-annexed Crimea and serves as a key supply route for the Kremlin's forces in the war with Ukraine came to a standstill

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 510. Large contingents of Russian forces are on the offensive in northeastern Ukraine's Kupiansk sector and engaged in heavy fighting. “We are defending. Heavy fighting is going on and the positions of both sides change dynamically several times a day,” Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister said.

Russia says it is pulling out of Ukraine grain deal. Kremlin says it will rejoin the deal if its demands are met.

Russian missiles damage Odesa port, Ukraine says. The attack came after Russia pulled out of the Black Sea grain deal on Monday.

IRAN THREAT

US sending jets, warship to Gulf to protect ships from Iranian seizure. The U.S. is sending additional military assets to the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman to increase security for commercial ships there.

NORTH KOREA THREAT

Nuclear-armed US submarine makes first port call in South Korea in four decades. The move comes just days after North Korea test-fired what it said was a solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile. 

SPACE THREAT

Space Force should offer European allies protection from anti-satellite attacks. “The destruction of a satellite may not have that same public effect as a missile attack into a civilian population, but from a military standpoint, you've still definitely created an act of war,” said Gen. Chance Saltzman.

US pushes military cooperation in space. Conflict in Ukraine has made it that space is fundamental to modern war, says chief of space operations.

Russian fighter jet flies dangerously close to US warplane over Syria. A Russian fighter flew very close to a U.S. aircraft over Syria, forcing it to go through the turbulent wake and putting the lives of the four American crew members in danger.

NICE PORT CALL! – Carrier USS Ronald Reagan makes port call to Bali. The Reagan Carrier Strike Group (CSG) made a port call to Bali, Indonesia, Sunday following routine operations in the Indian Ocean.

B-52's unexpected visit echoes Yokota's history as a bomber base. A B-52H Stratofortress' sojourn at the home of U.S. Forces Japan in western Tokyo is a reminder of the airlift hub's history as a bomber base.

Japan, France to hold first-ever joint fighter jet drill next week. Japan and France will hold their first-ever joint fighter jet drill from July 26-29, according to Japan's Air Self-Defence Force.

UK defense plan focuses on replenishing weapons stockpiles. Britain's defense ministry plans to boost weapons stockpiles spending and form what it calls a global response force, as part of new effort to improve warfighting readiness.

An Arctic ‘Great Game' as NATO allies and Russia face off in far north. The war in Ukraine has put the frostbitten borderlands between Norway and Russia on heightened alert, while increasing the geostrategic importance of the Arctic.

India, France increase defense ties with new Rafale jet and submarine buys. As part of Modi's visit to France, the two countries released a document entitled “Horizon 2047,” noting plsnned collaboration between the two sides — including on defense issues.

WELL DESERVED – Tuskegee Airmen honored with monument on piazza in Italian city. A monument dedicated to the Tuskegee Airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group was unveiled this week as the town paid tribute to them and to its own crucial contribution in World War II.

US MILITARY

Army shift from brigades back to divisions raises concerns among retired generals. Change is afoot in the Army: Divisions are returning to prominence.

The US Navy needs more attack submarines. To supply our allies, and counter the threat from China, the time to double sub production is now.

Top officer, enlisted leader at Marine boot camp regiment fired. The commanding officer and the senior enlisted leader at the Marine Corps' East Coast recruit training regiment have been fired.

VA lays groundwork for first major survey of ‘moral injury' in veterans. The most familiar moral and ethical dilemmas in warfare include deciding whether to fire on someone who represents an uncertain threat, for example, or living with the knowledge of civilian collateral damage of battle.

Court-martial convictions would need unanimous jury verdicts under measure added to defense bill. This as part of amendment added to the House's version last week.

  2. If done should combine Marines, Navy, Army, USCG , Air/Space Force
    NOT seperate armed force

  3. A cyber force would be great if used against America’s enemies, and NOT the Biden administration’s enemies.
