President Donald Trump said a major agreement with Iran has been “largely negotiated,” with U.S. officials confirming Tehran agreed in principle to relinquish its stockpile of highly enriched uranium as part of the proposed deal.

According to The Times of Israel, the proposal would require Iran to surrender or transfer its stockpile of highly enriched uranium as part of a phased framework aimed at ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz:

The report comes days after Iranian sources claimed that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, had issued a directive that the near-weapons-grade uranium should not be sent abroad.

Iran has a stockpile of more than 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium in its possession, which Israeli officials have said is sufficient for 11 nuclear bombs if enriched further.

Earlier this month, a senior Israeli military official said if the uranium wasn’t removed, the war launched in February could be considered “one big failure.”

Trump said negotiations involving the United States, Iran, Pakistan, and several Gulf countries were nearing completion, though he acknowledged unresolved issues remained. “It’s largely negotiated,” Trump said Saturday, adding that final details could be announced “shortly.”

The uranium issue has long been the central dispute in negotiations. U.S. officials have demanded “zero enrichment” and removal of Iran’s existing stockpile, arguing the material could quickly be used to build nuclear weapons if further refined. Iran has historically resisted surrendering enriched uranium, viewing it as both sovereign leverage and a deterrent against future attacks.

Iranian officials publicly pushed back on portions of Trump’s announcement Saturday, with state media cautioning that no final agreement had yet been reached. Tehran has repeatedly insisted it will not permanently abandon civilian nuclear enrichment or accept terms perceived as unconditional surrender.

Analysts say the proposed transfer or dilution of Iran’s uranium stockpile resembles key provisions from the original 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which capped enrichment levels and sharply reduced Iran’s uranium reserves in exchange for sanctions relief.

The emerging agreement comes after months of escalating military conflict, economic disruption, and political pressure on the Trump administration over the expanding Iran war. Oil markets and global shipping remain focused on the fate of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global petroleum supplies normally transit.
