WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Iran has requested a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict, though Iranian officials have not confirmed the claim.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran’s leadership had reached out seeking a ceasefire. He added that any agreement would depend on the reopening and security of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
“We will consider [a ceasefire] when the Strait of Hormuz is open, free, and clear,” Trump said.
“Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!” he added.
As CNBC reports:
The announcement came hours before Trump was set to deliver an “important update on Iran” in an address to the nation, according to the White House.
The address is set for 9 p.m. ET.
It was not immediately clear if Iran would confirm or reject Trump’s claim that Tehran’s “New Regime President” had asked for the ceasefire. The two sides have frequently contradicted each other’s claims about the existence and status of peace-deal talks since the war began on Feb. 28.
It was also not clear if any ceasefire request was made directly to the U.S., as Trump’s post suggested, or if it came via an intermediary, such as Pakistan.
There has been no public confirmation from Tehran. Iranian officials have not acknowledged making such a request and have previously denied engaging in direct negotiations with the United States.
The discrepancy has raised questions about whether any communication occurred and, if so, whether it came through official channels or informal backchannel contacts.
Trump has repeatedly said Iran is seeking a deal, at times describing its leadership as “desperate” for a ceasefire.
Meanwhile, the United States has advanced a multi-point ceasefire proposal through intermediaries. Iran has rejected several elements of that plan while putting forward its own conditions.
Trump has indicated that any agreement would require the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees for safe passage of global oil shipments. The waterway remains a central flashpoint due to its importance to international energy markets.
With both sides signaling different positions, the prospects for a ceasefire remain uncertain as diplomatic efforts continue alongside ongoing fighting.
