9/11 COMMEMORATION
9/11 veterans recall moment ‘the whole world stopped.' Sept. 11, 2001, altered many people's lives as they watched iconic symbols in New York City crumble. Friends and family members died.
NATIONAL SECURITY
HMMM – The Navy says it has more UFO footage, but it is classified for national security. The videos have “sensitive information” and are “exempt from disclosure in their entirety,” the Navy claims.
FOLLY? – US pushes ASAT missile ban as UN norms group reconvenes. When the United Nations working group attempting to hammer out international norms to govern military activities in space reconvenes on Sept. 12, on the table will be a formal resolution offered by the US for a ban on testing of destructive anti-satellite missiles.
CHINA THREAT
MESSAGE TO CHINA – US sends F-22 Raptor stealth jets to Australia to train alongside F-35A fighters. American F-22 fighters are training in northern Australia alongside the host nation's F-35A jets as part of an initiative meant to improve interoperability between their armed forces.
DoD eyes waiver to resume F-35 deliveries halted over Chinese alloy. The Pentagon's top acquisition official said Friday he is hopeful a temporary halt to F-35 deliveries, prompted by the discovery that a key magnet in the fighter was made with raw materials that came from China, can be resolved soon.
RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR
Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 201. Ukrainian forces advanced north from Kharkiv to within 50 kilometers (30 miles) of the border with Russia and are also pressing to the south and east in the same region, Ukrainian chief commander General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi said.
Russian forces retreat amid Ukrainian counteroffensives. A growing flow of Western weapons is now playing a key role in the counteroffensive, helping Ukraine significantly boost its precision strike capability.
Ukraine's threatened nuclear plant shuts down. The last operating reactor at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is Europe's largest, was shut down Sunday to reduce the threat of a radiation disaster amid the continuing fighting.
Ukrainian officials drew on US intelligence to plan counteroffensive. Overcoming a reluctance to share their strategy, the Ukrainians were able to use U.S. resources to identify key Russian targets.
INTERNATIONAL SECURITY
Indian, Chinese troops pull back from western Himalayan area. Military disengagement from Gogra-Hot Springs border area comes ahead of expected Xi Jinping, Narendra Modi meeting.
WEST RETREATS IN AFRICA – Attack by ISIS affiliate leaves 30 dead in Mali as fallout from European withdrawal continues. Mali continues to destabilize after France withdrew its forces from the region, which some have dubbed ‘Africa's Afghanistan.'
BIDEN'S AFGHAN FIASCO
BIDEN DISHONORED ALL 9/11 VICTIMS BY GIVING AFGHANISTAN BACK TO TALIBAN – Biden honors 9/11 victims as shadow of Afghan war looms. President Joe Biden has marked the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, laying a wreath at the Pentagon.
SO MUCH FOR BIDEN'S OVER THE HORIZON (OTH) CT PLAN – WE CAN'T KILL EM IF WE CAN'T SEE EM – Retired general: US has ‘very limited ability' to see into Afghanistan. Retired Gen. Frank McKenzie on Sunday warned about what he sees as a reduced intelligence capability in Afghanistan after the United States withdrew ground troops last year.
WELCOME TO AMERICA, ABANDONED AFGHAN ALLIES – Former Afghan fighter pilot now firefighting as newcomers join US workforce. Walmart, Pfizer and Amazon are among companies offering special benefits to hire some of the Afghans evacuated last summer.
US MILITARY AND SPACE
YES, PLEASE – Do the obvious thing: Establish a Space National Guard. Congress and the administration are faced with one of two solutions: establish a Space National Guard or lose the manpower and experience that exists in the Air National Guard, argue Mitchell Institute's Tim Ryan and AFA's Stuart Pettis.
NO BUENO – Navy orders high-level outside investigation of SEAL course. The punishing selection course for the Navy's most elite force has come under new scrutiny after a sailor's death exposed illicit drug use and other problems.
