SERIOUSLY? – Trump lawyers suggest seized Mar-a-Lago documents may not be classified. In a new court filing, lawyers for the former president push back on a Justice Department request to limit the role of a special master.
DOJ signals agreement to Trump’s choice for special master. The Department of Justice signaled in a filing Monday that it would accept a special master candidate proposed by former President Trump’s legal team for overseeing a review of the documents the FBI retrieved from Mar-a-Lago.

UNACCEPTABLE – US trails China in key tech areas, new report warns. Ex-Google, DOD leaders paint dire picture unless U.S. organizes to win technology races.
Aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan departs Japan for second leg of regional patrol. The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan steamed out of Tokyo Bay with its strike group on Monday to continue its annual Indo-Pacific patrol.
RUSSIA THREAT – UKRAINE WAR
CRISIS RESPONSE NAVAL FORCE – US Navy and allies begin exercise near Turkey as NATO monitors Russian ships. A multinational naval exercise focused on crisis response started this week in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, bringing warships from 12 NATO countries into an area with a sizable Russian naval presence.
STUNNING VICTORY – Ukraine reclaims more territory, reports capturing many POWs. Ukrainian troops retook a wide swath of territory from Russia on Monday, pushing all the way back to the northeastern border in some places, and claimed to have captured many Russian soldiers as part of a lightning advance that forced Moscow to make a hasty retreat.
Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 202. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is calling on the West to speed up deliveries of weapons systems as Ukrainian troops move to consolidate control over a large swath of northeastern territory seized back from Russia. Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had retaken 6,000 square km (2,400 square miles) of Russian-held territory since the beginning of the month.
IS IT A ROUT YET? – Some Russian forces appear to be fleeing Ukraine, Pentagon says. An inability to avoid certain strategic errors has eroded Russia’s hold on eastern Ukraine, officials said.
IRAN THREAT
BIDEN DITHERS AS IRAN READIES FOR NUKE BREAKOUT – Iran, US seem unlikely to reach a new nuclear deal. Both sides have said they want to return to 2015’s JCPOA, but a number of sticking points remain.
INTERNATIONAL SECURITY
Pitch Black participants benefit from Australian base upgrades. Participants in a recent air combat exercise used Australia’s upgraded air bases that are still undergoing work in part to support an increased rotational presence of U.S. forces.
WARS AND RUMORS OF WARS – Clashes erupt along Armenia-Azerbaijan border, potentially reigniting an old conflict. A decades-old conflict may be on the verge of reigniting, as reports emerged this week of attacks along the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
GOOD – Brazilian airmen deepen ties in US visit. This week, more than 100 mid-career officers from Brazil’s Air Force Command and Staff College and Air Command and Staff Studies program are in the U.S. for meetings and briefings, beginning with a brief from AFA’s Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies.
