A Royal Oak school board meeting turned emotional Thursday night as a local woman broke down in tears while urging officials to shut down a newly formed Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter at Royal Oak High School. The chapter, approved on Oct. 21, has sparked protests, a student walkout, and a fierce debate over political expression and student safety.
Multiple left-leaning students, parents, and community members spoke against the conservative-leaning organization, arguing the club would open the door to “radicalization” and create a hostile environment for “vulnerable” students.
Emotional Plea From Parent Sparks Tense Exchange
Kim Johnson, a self-described lifelong Royal Oak resident and youth advocate, delivered the meeting’s most emotional remarks. She said she was “deeply saddened and outraged” by what she described as a national decline in democratic norms and a rise in bigotry, claiming the TPUSA chapter could contribute to extremist behavior on campus.
“The current plan to observe and allow groups like Turning Point USA is one that, in my opinion, will allow a path of radicalization for some of our youngest students,” Johnson said. “Extremist groups like Turning Point USA don’t typically keep their opinions to the confines of four walls in a meeting.”
Johnson warned that students belonging to marginalized groups might feel unsafe, saying, “Are we not signaling to our LGBTQ plus community, people of color, people with neurodivergencies, and those struggling with mental illness that they are not safe at school anymore?” She later broke into tears as she urged the district to reject the chapter entirely.
Critics Note Irony After TPUSA Founder Was Killed for His Views
Johnson’s warnings about the “dangers of extremism” struck some in the audience as ironic, given that TPUSA’s founder, Charlie Kirk, was assassinated on Sept. 10 — a killing carried out explicitly because of his political views. His alleged murderer, Tyler Robinson, expressed left-wing ideological motivations and was reportedly dating a transgender person. To supporters of the club, Kirk’s death underscores the very real dangers faced by conservatives, not the threat posed by forming a TPUSA chapter. For them, shutting down the group in the name of combating extremism ignores the fact that TPUSA itself has become a target of extremist violence.
Students Say They’re Facing Harassment for Supporting the Club
One Royal Oak High School student described a barrage of harassment directed at those who expressed interest in joining the club.
Junior Braxton Romano told the board that within hours of the chapter launching an Instagram page, hundreds of hostile comments appeared. He said students were bullied through texts, targeted by online smear pages, and even added to a late-night Snapchat group chat where threats were aimed at the chapter’s founder.
“Even during the protest, I was receiving bullying texts,” Romano said. “Defamation was being used against me.”
TPUSA Says Interest Surged After Kirk’s Assassination
A TPUSA spokesperson confirmed the Royal Oak chapter was formed after Kirk’s death and said the organization has received more than 100,000 inquiries about starting chapters nationwide in the weeks since. The spokesperson also confirmed they are aware of the bullying reported at Royal Oak High School.
TPUSA Chapters Have Faced Hostile Protests Nationwide
TPUSA’s presence on campuses has repeatedly triggered confrontations. At a recent UC Berkeley event, an attendee was beaten by Antifa-aligned protesters. In 2022, a TPUSA event featuring journalist Andy Ngo and former Antifa member Gabriel Nadales was canceled at Dartmouth College due to security concerns. That same year, a TPUSA meeting at a Missouri high school was shut down after left-wing students overturned a glass table and disrupted the event.
District Weighs Free Speech and Safety Concerns
Royal Oak school officials have not signaled plans to revoke the chapter’s authorization. The meeting made clear, however, how sharply divided the community has become: critics warning of political extremism and supporters warning of intolerance and violence toward conservative students.
As of publication, the district has not announced any change to the chapter’s status.

Not only are those radical, irrational, hysterical idiots wrong about the nature of TPUSA, they are trying to deny freedom of speech to people with legitimate points of view and aims. They are most definitely unAmerican and in fact, with their usual vile and violent protest words and actions, are antiAmerican.
