After the U.S. steps in…

Off the back of five days of deadly clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border, the two countries have agreed to an unconditional ceasefire, set to take effect at midnight local time (July 29, 2025, 00:00 ICT) following mediation in Kuala Lumpur spearheaded by the United States and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The border row started when a land mine explosion maimed five Thai soldiers. Both sides blamed each other for initiating the subsequent clashes that have killed at least dozens of people and displaced nearly 300,000.

According to the Associated Press, the deal was secured during talks attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

The border fighting, driven by longstanding territorial disputes (notably around the Emerald Triangle and Preah Vihear temple), erupted on July 24 and led to intense artillery strikes, air operations, and ground engagements.

As chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Malaysia led the mediation efforts on the ground.

The U.S., represented by President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio, also played a key role — Trump reportedly warned that continued conflict would jeopardize any U.S. trade deals with either nation.

BBC News reports that, at Trump’s urging, representatives from Cambodia and Thailand met:

On Sunday US President Donald Trump said he told the leaders of both counties there would be no talks on reducing the 36% trade tariffs he has imposed on them unless they ended the fighting.

“I called the prime ministers of each and said, ‘we’re not going to make a trade deal unless you settle a war’,” he said. “I think they want to settle.”

At the beginning of a private visit to his Scottish golf courses, Trump wrote on Truth Social that both nations “have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!”

While both nations expressed gratitude to Trump for his concern, sporadic cross-border shelling persisted on Sunday.
