Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and all of his cabinet secretaries resigned effective immediately on Friday after the country’s four-party governing coalition failed to overcome an impasse on immigration restrictions.

The Netherlands, which allocates parliamentary seats according to a system of proportional representation, has a history of government collapses — and subsequent reelection gains. Rutte and his cabinet resigned in 2021 after a scandal involving falsely accusing parents of child welfare fraud but gained seats when they were reelected two months later. His government also resigned in 2012 after budget negotiations broke down and were reelected in a stronger position. This phenomenon is not unique to Rutte: In 2017, when his cabinet completed a full four-year term, it was the first in the Netherlands to do so for almost two decades.
The coalition that collapsed Friday was formed in December 2021 after months of negotiations following elections that year, comprising Rutte’s center-right People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD); the centrist Democrats 66 (D66) and Christian Union parties; as well as the center-right Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party.
The partnership has been a fraught one from the start, according to local media — on Friday Dutch public broadcaster NOS said it had been a marriage “doomed to fail” and pointed to migration policy as one of the biggest sticking points. The VVD and CDA parties were in favor of stricter restrictions, with D66 and the Christian Union opposed, NOS reported.
The coalition had been negotiating over policies to limit the number of refugees and asylum seekers in the Netherlands, including reportedly changing the country’s approach to family reunification.
A visit by Doctors Without Borders to a refugee reception center near the German border last year caused a minor scandal after it found several hundred refugees living outside in “inhumane and undignified” conditions.
Dutch officials estimate they’ll receive 70,000 asylum applications this year.

All countries need to put a stop to all these migrants flooding into their country and using that phony asylum business. If they don’t it won’t be too many years before they will be the majority and the citizens will be the minority. They will destroy your country just as the did in the one they left.
Many to most migrants are not fleeing to westernized countries for fear of political persecution but rather for the ‘free’ stuff liberal minded governments tend to hand out through the involuntary generosity of its taxpayers. In ‘their’ own countries, people who don’t work but able to, aren’t coddled, their put on notice. The more ‘democratic’ nations abuse their taxpayers by doing the opposite. They know their own westernized citizens have become more compassionate, even to a fault. And even when these more compassionate citizens realize the massive negatives from just coddling the freeloaders, they’re too complacent to hold their officials accountable. Accountable in the way that the officials should be made to shoulder the larger share of the cost through less pay & benefits and paying their own taxes without political loopholes they provide themselves through legislation. (instead, they reward themselves by voting for their own pay raises. Tax breaks/credits & abilities to vote for their own pay raises which will forever remain unavailable to the average citizen.
