Marine Le Pen Sentenced To Four Years, Barred From 2027 Race

Did the French establishment just eliminate its biggest political threat?

Marine Le Pen—France’s most popular opposition leader and current front-runner for the 2027 presidential election—was sentenced Monday to four years in prison by a French court. Two of those years will be served under house arrest with an ankle monitor. She’s also been hit with a five-year ban from public office, effectively blocking her from running in 2027.

The official charge? Embezzlement of EU funds—allegedly using over €4 million between 2004 and 2016 to pay party staff for work said to be unrelated to their parliamentary duties. Le Pen denies the charges, and her legal team is appealing.

With polls showing her ahead of all other contenders, including President Emmanuel Macron’s likely successors, the 2027 race appeared to be hers to lose.

But now, she’s been effectively sidelined—and not at the ballot box, but years before a single vote is cast. The move has sparked outrage from her supporters and fueled claims that the establishment is using legal and procedural tools to eliminate political threats before voters ever get their say.

Politico has more information regarding the future of the controversial right-wing icon:

The decision would appear to open the door for Jordan Bardella, the National Rally president and Le Pen’s heir-apparent, to become the flag-bearer for the far right and run for the presidency.

Twenty-four others stood trial alongside Le Pen, including several top figures from the right-wing populist and nationalist National Rally party.

All but one were convicted with the harshest punishment reserved for Le Pen.

Prosecutors took the extraordinary step of asking the three-judge panel presiding over the case to immediately enact Le Pen’s ban on running for office rather than wait until the appeals process has concluded, which is the norm in France.

The judges agreed, citing the gravity of Le Pen’s crime. They also fined her €100,000 and sentenced to four years in prison, two of which were suspended — but those penalties could be delayed by a possible appeal.

“Today, it’s not just Marine Le Pen who is unfairly condemned: It’s French democracy that is being executed,” said Bardella.

Le Pen was previously convicted in 2024 for distributing violent content on social media, nearly a decade after she posted graphic images of ISIS atrocities to her Twitter account (now X) in response to media comparisons between her party and the terrorist group.

That case stemmed from December 2015, when Le Pen posted three disturbing images in response to sensationalist media comparisons between her party—then called the National Front—and the Islamic State terrorist group. One of the images showed the body of American journalist James Foley, who had been beheaded by ISIS.

Le Pen captioned the tweets: “This is Daesh” (the Arabic acronym for ISIS), using them as part of a political protest to differentiate her movement from barbarous acts of terrorism.

Nevertheless, French authorities charged Le Pen with “disseminating violent messages likely to seriously harm human dignity and likely to be seen by a minor.” The case dragged on for years, finally culminating in a €5,000 fine.

The latest legal battles come at a pivotal moment in French politics. With President Macron constitutionally barred from seeking another term, Marine Le Pen had emerged as the clear front-runner—a three-time presidential candidate finally poised to break through.

Her campaign has focused on issues like immigration, national identity and law and order—themes that resonate deeply with millions of disillusioned French voters. Le Pen argues that the political establishment has ignored these issues for too long, and now, she claims, they’re using the courts to silence the movement she represents.

For the time being, the scandal has had little effect on the polls regarding Le Pen or the National Rally’s popularity.
