Islamabad witnessed a brutal crackdown late Tuesday as security forces opened fire on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters, killing and injuring an undisclosed number of protesters, possibly including women and children. The incident marks a grim escalation of tensions under the Shehbaz-Zardari-Asim regime.

Violent Dispersal of Protesters
The protests were aimed at demanding the release of their party’s leader, former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Demonstrators had gathered for a planned sit-in at D Chowk (Democracy Square), but the protest was violently dispersed. Dramatic scenes circulated on social media, including one particularly shocking video appearing to show security forces shoving a man in prayer off of a stack of shipping containers, likely to his death.
A post from PTI’s official account on X alleged a cover-up, stating: “33 dead bodies have been brought to one hospital alone, while there are more dead bodies at other hospitals and at various places in D Chowk.” The government has yet to release official casualty figures, deepening suspicions about the extent of the violence.
Background of the PTI Crackdown
The PTI, founded in 1996 by Imran Khan, has been under relentless pressure since Khan’s ousting in 2022 and subsequent arrest in May 2023 on corruption charges—a case he denies. Following his arrest, riots broke out nationwide, leading to accusations by the Punjab Police that PTI leaders orchestrated attacks on military installations, including the residence of the Lahore corps commander. Authorities cited geo-fencing reports, claiming over 400 calls were made by PTI leadership—including Khan—to incite the violence.
While the government portrays these actions as necessary to maintain order, critics argue they are part of a broader campaign to suppress dissent and discredit the PTI. Khan’s removal from office through a no-confidence motion in April 2022 fueled widespread public sympathy for him and PTI. The perception that his ouster was orchestrated by a coalition of traditional political elites and the military galvanized his support base.
Communication Blackouts and Military Deployment
In response to the protests, the government imposed a cellular service and internet blackout, further restricting information flow. The capital remains heavily barricaded, with military personnel deployed to enforce order.
Reports of mass arrests began surfacing on Sunday as PTI supporters initiated their march on Islamabad. Since then, hundreds have been detained, with little clarity on their whereabouts or legal recourse.
Growing Humanitarian Concerns
Observers have expressed alarm over the security forces’ heavy-handed response. The use of live ammunition, targeted assaults on civilians and mass detentions have prompted widespread outrage.
While a prolonged crackdown may weaken PTI’s operational capacity in the short term, the situation could deteriorate into extended unrest. The unfolding events serve as a stark reminder of Pakistan’s fragile and ostensibly democratic system, where civilian governments often operate under the military’s shadow, and dissent is met with repression.
