According to multiple reports Friday morning, New York City Mayor Eric Adams met earlier this week in Florida with Steve Witkoff, a real estate developer and President Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East. The meeting allegedly included discussion of a potential federal post for Adams — possibly U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia — in exchange for him bowing out of the 2025 mayoral race.
The goal? To consolidate the anti-socialist vote and block Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist and the current frontrunner, from seizing City Hall.
Sources close to the discussions say the plan would involve clearing the field not just of Adams but also GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa. That would leave former Governor Andrew Cuomo as the primary challenger to Mamdani — a move Team Trump believes could unite moderates, independents, and disaffected Democrats behind a more viable alternative.
The New York Post continues:
Adams traveled to the Sunshine State late Monday as part of an undisclosed trip that was later confirmed by his team to be part of his 65th birthday celebration.
The mayor didn’t reveal what he did during the jaunt south, but did not deny that he met with people in the Trump administration, when asked.
It emerged on Wednesday that discussions about finding Adams a cushy gig in Washington had reached the highest levels of the Trump admin.
The Post reported on Thursday that Trump himself had phoned influential businessman John Catsimatidis, a friend of Adams, and set a deadline for the mayor and GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa to drop out.
Adams, for his part, has denied the rumors of a career shift. His office insists he remains in the race and is focused on securing a second term.
“I have a job. I’m running for reelection… and I’m looking forward to getting reelected,” he said.
Still, the mere fact that these conversations are happening speaks volumes. The political establishment — left, right, and center — seems increasingly alarmed by Mamdani’s rise and is looking for any lever to pull before the far-left locks down the Big Apple’s top office.
