Soros-Backed Grant Tied To Group Seeking Conservative Media Purge

A new disclosure about the George Soros-funded Open Society Foundations is raising fresh questions about the group’s role in global censorship efforts.

OSF records show the foundation awarded $250,000 last year to the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a United Kingdom-based nonprofit known for pressuring advertisers, investors, and tech companies to cut ties with conservative media outlets. The CCDH has also been linked to a coordinated effort to financially damage Elon Musk’s X platform.

CCDH’s Approach

Founded in 2018 by former Labour Party operative Imran Ahmed, the CCDH promotes itself as a watchdog against online hate and disinformation. In practice, the organization has pushed tech companies to demonetize or ban content it labels racist, misleading, or otherwise harmful.

Past CCDH campaigns have targeted conservative outlets such as The Federalist and The Daily Wire by urging advertisers to pull support.

Clash With Musk

The six-figure OSF grant highlights the ongoing feud between Musk, the CCDH, and Soros. Musk has accused Soros of funding groups tied to violent protests and has referred to the CCDH as a criminal organization. He has also said he plans legal action against donors who support efforts that he argues are intended to weaken X financially.

Documents published by Racket News reported that the CCDH organized a campaign last year aimed at pressuring advertisers to abandon X, internally describing the effort as a plan to “kill Musk’s Twitter.”

The group has also increased its presence in Washington. It met with 16 congressional offices during Musk’s lawsuit and held policy discussions with Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota. The CCDH has pushed for the creation of an independent digital regulator, a proposal critics say would open the door to government-backed censorship.

Legal and Political Pressure

Since Musk purchased Twitter in 2022 and pledged broader protections for speech, the CCDH has stepped up its criticism. Musk sued the group in July 2023 over claims in a CCDH report alleging a rise in hate speech on X.

The CCDH keeps its donor list private, but the OSF grant sheds light on questions raised by House investigators. In 2023, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio subpoenaed the CCDH for its donor records as part of an inquiry into alleged coordination of censorship efforts across major platforms.

Additional filings show the Skoll Fund donated $415,000 to the CCDH in 2023, while the Silicon Valley Community Foundation contributed $403,175. The organization’s revenue that year exceeded $2.1 million.

Scrutiny From Washington

The grant disclosure comes as the Trump administration increases pressure on entities linked to Soros. President Trump has called for investigations into George and Alex Soros over allegations of funding violent riots, claims both deny.

Officials are also evaluating visa revocation for CCDH head Imran Ahmed. The Sunday Telegraph reported that Ahmed is high on the list of potential cancellations due to his role in international censorship campaigns.

Political Links in the United Kingdom

The CCDH’s leadership has strong political ties. Ahmed cofounded the group with Morgan McSweeney, now chief of staff to U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Reports that Starmer aides met with Kamala Harris campaign officials last summer drew criticism from the Trump campaign, which accused them of election interference.

Targeting Conservative Outlets

The CCDH has repeatedly focused on conservative news sites. In 2020, it urged Google to block ads from The Federalist and ZeroHedge over comments related to the George Floyd protests. In 2023, the group issued a lengthy report criticizing Google for placing Daily Wire ads next to searches involving George Soros.

Broad Reach of Soros-Backed Efforts

The revelation is likely to intensify scrutiny of how large foundations and advocacy groups influence debates over online speech, particularly as governments and tech companies consider new content moderation rules. Supporters say the funding encourages research and transparency, while critics argue it blurs the line between public-interest work and political influence. As policymakers reexamine the role of outside money in the digital arena, the disclosures are expected to fuel renewed calls for stronger oversight and accountability.
