Comey Faces New Indictment

Former FBI Director James Comey is back in legal trouble, with a new indictment filed under President Donald Trump’s Justice Department, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Full details of the charges have not been made public. But the move signals a sharp turnaround for a case that appeared to be finished just months ago.

A case brought back to life

Comey was first indicted in September 2025 on charges tied to alleged false statements and obstruction related to his Senate testimony. That case fell apart in November, when a judge dismissed it without prejudice, citing the unlawful appointment of the prosecutor.

At the time, the dismissal left the door open for prosecutors to try again. Now, they have.

The new indictment marks a clear revival effort, led in part by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. Sources say Blanche has pushed to accelerate cases that align with Trump’s long-standing grievances over past investigations.

Focus shifts to social media post

This time, the case appears to center on a different issue: a social media post Comey made in May 2026.

The post showed seashells arranged to form the numbers “86 47.” Critics quickly seized on the image, arguing that “86” is slang for removing or killing someone, while “47” referred to Trump, the 47th president.

Republican lawmakers and the Department of Homeland Security condemned the post. The Secret Service interviewed Comey for several hours soon after it surfaced.

Comey said at the time that there was no intent to threaten the president.

Political tensions in the background

The renewed indictment fits into a broader pattern. Trump has repeatedly accused Comey and other officials tied to the Russia investigation of using federal law enforcement against him for political purposes.

He has pointed to episodes like this as evidence of what he calls the “weaponization” of the justice system.

The Justice Department’s latest move suggests those claims are not just rhetoric but are now shaping prosecutorial decisions.

What comes next

It’s still unclear how far this case will go or how it differs legally from the earlier effort that failed in court.

What is clear is that prosecutors are not backing off.

For Comey, the legal fight is starting over. And for the Trump-aligned Justice Department, it’s another step in a long-running effort to revisit the battles of the past several years.
