The White House's claim President Biden was completely unaware of the FBI's plan to raid former President Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence is going up in flames. Despite the already fishy narrative, a letter from the head of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) squashes the false claim for good.
When Florida Judge Aileen Cannon granted Trump's request for a special master, she referenced a specific NARA letter in her reasoning to grant the motion. (RELATED: Judge Approves Trump's Request for Special Master)
The Washington Examiner reports:
In her ruling, Cannon pointed out that a letter from the National Archives to Trump's legal team in May concluded by saying: “NARA will provide the FBI access to the records in question, as requested by the incumbent President, beginning as early as Thursday, May 12, 2022.”
The “incumbent President” was clearly Biden.
It comes after acting Archivist Debra Wall sent the May 10 letter to Trump lawyer Evan Corcoran informing him that the National Archives came into possession 15 boxes of records transferred from Mar-a-Lago in January, and an initial review of the records “identified items marked as classified national security information.”
The archivist said this soon resulted in Biden and the White House being made aware of the situation.
“NARA informed the Department of Justice about that discovery, which prompted the Department to ask the President to request that NARA provide the FBI with access to the boxes at issue so that the FBI and others in the Intelligence Community could examine them,” Wall wrote in the letter. “On April 11, 2022, the White House Counsel's Office — affirming a request from the Department of Justice supported by an FBI letterhead memorandum — formally transmitted a request that NARA provide the FBI access to the 15 boxes for its review within seven days.”
In August, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden had not been briefed prior to the FBI's search.
“No. The president was not briefed … was not aware of it. No. No one at the White House was given a heads up,” Jean-Pierre said the day after the search. “We learned about this just like the public, just as you all were reporting it, through the public reports.”
Biden's claim he was kept out of the loop of the FBI's unprecedented plans to raid a former president's home has already drawn criticism for obvious reasons. Garland's admission triggered an intense reaction from Republican lawmakers and Trump supporters alike. Last week, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) sent a letter to Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray demanding they appear before the House Judiciary Committee and hand over all communications concerning the raid.
