New York City Mayor Eric Adams is reportedly preparing to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration after it revoked $80 million in FEMA funding previously allocated for housing migrants. The move underscores the ongoing friction between local and federal officials over migrant assistance and financial support.
This revelation stems from a letter obtained by the New York Post:
Counsel for the Adams administration issued a letter to city Comptroller Brad Lander Friday stating that the city’s Law Department is looking to take legal action by Feb. 21 to recoup the $80.5 million Federal Emergency Management Agency payments taken by the feds on Tuesday.
“The Law Department is currently drafting litigation papers with respect to this matter,” the letter, penned by corporation counsel Mureil Goode-Trufant, said.
“We intend to initiate legal action by February 21, 2025. As the Law Department is representing the City of New York in this matter, there is no need for an authorization for the Comptroller’s Office to engage external legal counsel.”
The letter was sent just hours after Lander demanded the Adams administration either file a lawsuit or grant him permission to hire his own attorneys to bring a case against Trump and Department of Government Efficiency honcho Elon Musk.
The threat of legal action arises amid broader political tensions in New York City. Mayor Adams, who was under federal investigation, had the case against him dismissed by the Trump Justice Department—a decision that led to the resignation of seven career prosecutors. Among them was conservative legal rising star and Trump appointee Danielle Sassoon, a former clerk to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and a member of the Federalist Society. Sassoon, who served as the acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, criticized the dismissal, referring to it as a quid pro quo in an open letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Adding to the controversy, former acting ICE Director Tom Homan, now overseeing border enforcement under Trump, appeared on Fox & Friends—which President Trump is known to watch—alongside Adams the day after the charges against him were dropped and issued a pointed reminder to the mayor about an alleged agreement they had reached regarding migrant policy.
“If he doesn’t come through,” Homan said somewhat ominously, “I’ll be in his office, up his butt, saying, ‘Where the hell is the agreement we came to?'”
