Prosecutors Behind Trump Fraud Inquiry Resign

-

Two senior prosecutors leading the Manhattan district attorney's office's high-stakes investigation into 's business practices have resigned.

Both had abruptly stopped presenting evidence to a state grand jury.

The investigation began years ago with prosecutors focusing on allegations that the engaged in a pattern of fraud to secure favorable terms on loans, insurance coverage and tax deductions.

Recent developments appeared to suggest mounting trouble for Trump.

Business Insider reports on the latest twist out of New York:

The resignations from the two prosecutors, Carey Dunne and Mark Pomerantz, reportedly came after the new district attorney, , expressed doubts about moving forward with a case against former President Donald Trump.

At the same time, prosecutors had brought witnesses, including a prominent Trump accountant, to testify before the grand jury. Worse, , the longtime accounting firm for the Trump Organization, cut ties with Trump's business saying it could no longer stand behind the organization's annual statements.

In a fiery statement, Trump blamed “radical RACIST leftist prosecutors” for “frightening” his former accounting firm.

“My long-term accounting firm didn't leave me for any other reason than they were harassed, abused, and frightened by DA's and AG's that for years have been threatening them with indictment and ruination,” he wrote.

The DA's office previously indicted the Trump Organization and its longtime chief bookkeeper, Allen Weisselberg, on 15 felony counts. Trump has not been charged with a .

Pomerantz confirmed his resignation to The Times, and Dunne declined to comment on the matter. The paper reported that the investigation into Trump has stalled amid Bragg's hesitation to pursue charges against Trump, and that neither Pomerantz nor Dunne had questioned any witnesses before a grand jury in more than a month.

Today's twist in the investigation, first reported by The New York Times, came as shock, especially to those watching the case closely and Trump's opponents.

Although the Manhattan DA's investigation may have hit an impasse, Letitia James' civil investigation into the Trump Organization continues.
