Tennessee Governor Bill Lee just announced Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) intends to “release single adult detainees” into the Volunteer State while they await court proceedings.
The Governor told Fox News that his office has contacted the White House and asked them to reverse the plan to send immigrants to the Volunteer State.
“We’ve been informed by ICE that they plan to release single adult detainees into Tennessee while they await court proceedings,” Lee said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “This is irresponsible and a threat to the safety of Tennesseans.”
“Furthermore, we already have a national security crisis at our border, and the Biden administration’s attempt to revoke Title 42 will only incentivize more illegal crossings,” he added. “It’s not compassionate to perpetuate a problem that leads to more exploitation and trafficking. 7,000 people unlawfully enter our country every day.”
While the total number of detainees the agency is planning to release into Tennessee is unknown, Lee said: “This crisis is too big to ignore” and that the “only way to stop it is to secure the border.”
“Placing the burden on states is not a solution, and we should not bear the brunt of the federal government’s failures,” he said. “We are demanding the Biden administration reverse their plan for detainee relocation. In the meantime, we’re also discussing options with the Tennessee Attorney General and our federal delegation.”
On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a temporary stay on the upcoming end to Title 42.
Chief Justice John Roberts’ one-page order follows a last-ditch appeal to the high court by 19 Republican-led states.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the public health order “will remain in effect at this time and individuals who attempt to enter the United States unlawfully will continue to be expelled to Mexico.”
“While this stage of the litigation proceeds, we will continue our preparations to manage the border in a safe, orderly, and humane way when the Title 42 public health order lifts,” DHS said. “We urge Congress to use this time to provide the funds we have requested for border security and management and advance the comprehensive immigration measures President Biden proposed on his first day in office.”
