Judge Aileen Cannon declined to issue a ruling on former President Donald Trump’s bid to have a third-party special master review the evidence collected by the FBI during its search of his primary residence.
Instead, a written ruling will be released “in due course.”
Attorneys from the Department of Justice called Trump’s request for a special master, made weeks after FBI agents executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago, a belated attempt to delay the government’s investigation into whether or not Trump’s storage of documents from his time in the White House harmed national security.
The DOJ had urged Judge Cannon to deny Trump’s request, saying that during the yearlong legal back-and-forth that preceded the raid, Trump never claimed executive privilege over the top-secret and highly sensitive materials until very recently.
Trump’s lawyers handed over some of the documents in question in June after a grand jury subpoena required the former president to turn them over. Afterward, a Justice Department filing says DOJ “developed evidence that government records were likely concealed and removed from the storage room and that efforts were likely taken to obstruct the government’s investigation.”
Trump remains under investigation for potential crimes, including possible violations of the Espionage Act.

Trump should nominate a couple of people for the job, like Professor Jonathan Turley or Alan Dershowitz from Harvard Law School or Retired United States Supreme Court Justice Breyer, people who are above reproach of any kind.
