Stephen Miller Schools The Media On Presidential Powers

In an impassioned exchange at Thursday’s White House press briefing, Stephen Miller, the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, delivered what many are calling a “civics lesson” to the White House press corps. The lesson, which was enthusiastically received by conservatives, came in response to a question comparing concerns about Elon Musk serving as an “unelected bureaucrat” to media outlets have ignoring President Joe Biden’s declining mental state and unanswered questions about who was running the government during his presidency.

Miller, known for his outspoken defense of the president, did not hold back. He opened by criticizing the media’s failure during the previous administration to address concerns over his cognitive abilities, asserting that many in the room had “failed to cover the fact that Joe Biden was mentally incompetent and was not running the country” during his time in office.

He then turned his attention to the media’s portrayal of Musk’s unelected status, using the opportunity to provide a brief lesson in U.S. government structure. Miller explained that while members of Congress are elected at the district or state level and judges are appointed, the President is the only elected official chosen by the entire nation. He referenced Article II of the Constitution, specifically the “Vesting Clause,” which states that the executive power is vested in the president. Miller emphasized that the president is the sole figure with the authority to appoint staff and enforce the democratic will of the people.

“[The president] then appoints staff to impose that democratic will onto the government,” Miller said, reinforcing the idea that the president’s power comes directly from the people.

However, Miller didn’t stop there. He shifted the conversation to what he viewed as a more pressing threat to democracy: the unelected bureaucracy. Miller argued that the real existential threat to democracy was not an outsider like Musk but rather career bureaucrats who, he claimed, felt they were above accountability. He specifically called out bureaucrats within agencies like the FBI, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Justice Department, suggesting that these officials were resistant to change and failed to implement the will of the American people as expressed through their votes.

“The threat to democracy is the unelected bureaucracy of lifetime-tenured civil servants who believe they answer to no one,” Miller declared, adding that these bureaucrats set their own agenda despite Americans voting in favor of reform. He framed President Trump’s actions to remove these bureaucrats as necessary for preserving democracy, asserting that the president was simply fulfilling the will of the people by removing those who defied his lawful orders.

Miller’s comments quickly gained traction among conservative commentators, with many praising his masterful delivery.

This civics-focused moment at the press briefing highlights the ongoing political and ideological divides between the Trump administration’s defenders and its critics. While Miller’s words were met with applause from conservative circles, they also reinforced the broader tension between the elected government and what many conservatives view as an entrenched bureaucracy resistant to change.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, particularly in the wake of Trump’s stunning victory and sweeping reforms, the clash over presidential powers, the role of bureaucrats, and media coverage is likely to heighten. Whether or not this civics lesson shifts public opinion or reporting remains to be seen, but it certainly served as a strong rebuttal of the “constitutional crisis” narrative.
