Minneapolis police officers may face termination if they fail to intervene in situations where U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents use “unlawful force,” according to comments attributed to Police Chief Brian O’Hara. MS Now reported Friday that O’Hara made clear his officers are expected to take action if they witness excessive force by any law enforcement personnel operating within the city.
Asked how his officers should respond to excessive force from federal agents, O’Hara was quoted as saying, “If unlawful force is being used by any law enforcement officer against any person in this city and one of our officers is there, absolutely, I expect them to intervene, or they’ll be fired.”
MS Now also reported that O’Hara emphasized intervention would apply in situations where excessive force was “readily apparent.” A sergeant with the department clarified that while Minneapolis officers may physically intervene in such circumstances, they would not go so far as to arrest ICE agents.
The local guidance emerges as President Donald Trump pushes efforts to address illegal alien crime.
Earlier this week, O’Hara said his department is unable to directly assist ICE because of staffing shortages, according to Breitbart News. He noted that Minneapolis police lack the personnel necessary to manage both federal enforcement activity and the city’s own crime levels.
In August, O’Hara stated that the department has lost hundreds of officers since 2020 and has relied heavily on partnerships with state and federal authorities. “The only reason we have made progress over the last few years is because of the partnerships we have had, very aggressively prosecuting violent crime, with all of the federal law enforcement and state partners that we have,” he said. He added that the department cannot operate effectively “without all of our law enforcement and community partners.”
The concerns in Minneapolis arise amid reports of widespread theft, embezzlement, migration fraud, and welfare abuse involving Somali migrants in the state. ICE recently arrested several illegal immigrants from Somalia in its ongoing enforcement operations in Minneapolis.

This sounds like an illegal order. Doesn’t federal officers have priority over local enforcement? Interfering with a federal action should be illegal and that chief should be the one who is fired.
Level of force increases incrementally when the level of resistance from the suspect increases. Same in any law enforcement or even in the military. Those “law enforcement” officers being threatened by their leaders might better take a step back before they interfere with federal arrests or they themselves could end up in jail. US Code is clear about this.
Maybe the minnesota police chief should ask himself why he lost so many police officers in 2020…. police officers get tired of the woke crap, just like everybody else and minnesota does nothing but push it, encourage it and welcome it.
So you create a problem and now you’re crying because you have the problem. Maybe that’s enough for you to learn that the rest of america isn’t in line with your way of thinking…. minnesota sucks for a lot of reasons.
The cops didn’t swear to kiss the chief or mayors ass. They swore to uphold our laws and constitution.
