A top U.S. State Department official warned Thursday that foreign nationals who celebrate or justify the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk will face visa consequences, as the Trump administration takes a hardline stance on political violence and those who condone it — regardless of citizenship status.
Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau issued the warning via a post on X (formerly Twitter), making clear that glorifying acts of political violence against Americans, especially public figures like Kirk, is grounds for visa denial or revocation.
“In light of yesterday’s horrific assassination of a leading political figure, I want to underscore that foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country,” Landau wrote.
“I have been disgusted to see some on social media praising, rationalizing, or making light of the event, and have directed our consular officials to undertake appropriate action. Please feel free to bring such comments by foreigners to my attention so that the @StateDept can protect the American people.”
Foreign Nationals on Notice
A State Department spokesperson clarified to Newsweek that the administration’s policy is rooted in national security.
This approach is consistent with prior actions taken by the Trump administration to restrict entry to individuals linked to foreign extremist movements, including those espousing support for Hamas or anti-American ideologies.
While critics have attempted to frame these restrictions as First Amendment violations, the administration has emphasized that constitutional protections do not extend to foreign citizens seeking to enter the United States
The Broader Context: Political Violence and Immigration
Landau’s comments come just one day after President Donald Trump’s Oval Office address, in which he described Kirk’s killing as a politically motivated assassination and warned that radical rhetoric from the far-left has created an environment ripe for violence.
Trump described Kirk as a martyr for truth and freedom and decried the demonization of political opponents that he attributed by and large to the “radical left.”
While bipartisan condemnation of the assassination has come from both sides of the aisle for high profile politicians, online reactions have painted a darker picture, with many social media users mocking or celebrating the shooting.
Legal and Security Implications
This isn’t the first time the Trump administration has drawn a line on foreign nationals’ behavior abroad.
Earlier this year, the State Department began revoking student visas for individuals linked to anti-American or anti-Israel protests on U.S. campuses. Officials cited national security grounds and the need to prevent campus unrest and extremism.
Some of those actions were challenged in court, but the administration has stood firm, arguing that visa issuance is a privilege, not a right.
The administration has also expanded vetting processes at embassies and consulates worldwide, including screening applicants’ social media for signs of extremism, violent rhetoric, or support for anti-American causes.
Political Will and National Security
While critics — particularly in left-leaning media and academia — have accused the administration of overreach, supporters argue the crackdown is long overdue.
Many conservatives have praised Landau’s statement as a strong and necessary signal following the killing of a prominent young conservative leader. The fact that the shooter remains at large only adds to the sense of urgency.
What Comes Next
The State Department has not yet issued specific policy updates but is expected to publish new visa guidance in the coming days. Any foreign national who praises Kirk’s assassination could be subject to expedited visa denial, revocation, or removal proceedings if already in the country.

GREAT ,SEND THEM HOME.
We can restrict foreigners from the hate and vitriol, but not Americans and they are the ones who are the most embarrassing, misled, uninformed and dangerous. Which of the idiots on social media cheering for the death of a young husband and father will be the next one to take things into their own hands?
