Speaking to reporters after casting his vote Tuesday, New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani blamed President Donald Trump for a series of bomb threats that temporarily disrupted polling places in New Jersey.

“We have to understand this as part of the general approach of the Trump administration,” Mamdani said, framing the threats as part of a broader pattern of intimidation tactics amid his narrow polling lead over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The comments escalate Mamdani’s ongoing feud with Trump, who previously threatened to cut New York City funding and investigate Mamdani’s immigration status if he wins. No evidence has emerged linking Tuesday’s threats to the administration or its supporters.

Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer expressed disbelief on air after hearing Mamdani’s remarks, saying, “Unless we misheard him, what on earth is he talking about?”

Authorities said bomb threats were emailed to polling sites across seven New Jersey counties Tuesday morning, prompting temporary closures. Officials later deemed the threats noncredible and found no devices, echoing similar election-related disruptions that have occurred in previous years.

As New York City’s WABC-TV reports:

The emails went to polling locations in Bergen County, Essex County, Mercer County, Middlesex County, Monmouth County, Ocean County, and Passaic County.

Ridgewood Public Schools announced that they would close Tuesday. Polling stations in Ridgewood will operate as normal and remain open with an increased police presence.

During the 2024 election, bomb threats called into polling stations in key swing states prompted widespread delays in voting. The FBI later said they likely originated from Russia. Officials in New Jersey have not indicated the source of Tuesday’s threatening emails.

Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way, New Jersey’s top election official, sought to reassure the public amid rising concern. In a statement, she said that law enforcement had found no credible threats at this time. “We are doing everything in our power to protect voters and poll workers and coordinate closely with state, local and federal partners to ensure a smooth and safe election.”
