Kinzinger, who did not in 2022 run for reelection for his seat representing an Illinois district, was one of the two Republicans on the House Select Committee investigating the attack on the Capitol after the 2020 election. He was joined by former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, who was primaried in 2022 and lost her at-large House seat for Wyoming.

When leaving Congress in January 2023, Kinzinger joined CNN as a senior political commentator.

During his Monday appearance on CNN, Kinzinger gave a sneak peek into his recently released book “Renegade.”

It's a “tough question,” he stated when asked if he still identifies as a Republican.

“I do, only in that because I don't wanna give up on that fight. And this country needs two healthy parties, a healthy Democratic Party and a healthy Republican. So, I'm not gonna give up that title,” he vowed.

Despite calling himself a traditional Republican, Kinzinger admitted to voting for Democrats in 2022 and shared his intention to vote for in the upcoming presidential election.

“If it's Trump against Joe Biden, I'll vote Democratic this coming one,” he said. “I really believe it's down to one issue: do you believe in democracy, or do you believe in authoritarianism?”

“Because in Jan. 6, we saw the guardrails of democracy held,” the onetime Republican rising star claimed. “The car hit the rails. It kept you on the road. That rail can't take two hits. And now they know what they're doing. Now they know where the tricks are in the system.”
