A jury has ruled that conspiratorial media personality Alex Jones must pay $965 million for spreading lies that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a false flag operation and that the parents of the victims were “crisis actors.”

The money will go straight to the pockets of family members who lost a child in the massacre, and to an FBI agent who was harassed by Jones’ listeners. There were 15 plaintiffs in total.
Jones’ chaotic trial played out in Waterbury, Connecticut, 20 miles southwest of where 26 people were killed just over a decade ago. Jury deliberations began Oct. 6 and concluded Wednesday, with the six-person jury ruling unanimously that Jones must pay nearly a billion dollars for his hateful actions.
Only compensatory damages owed by Jones were determined on Wednesday. The jury will decide whether Jones must also pay punitive damages at a later date—a similar process to Jones’ August trial in Texas, where a jury ordered he pay $4.1 million in compensatory damages, shortly followed by a second order that Jones pay $45.2 million in punitive damages.
The conspiracy theorist, who was not present Wednesday, struggled to keep his cool during his time on the witness stand, even blurting out at one point that he was done saying sorry.

Watching the verdict from his Texas studio, the Infowars founder urged his audience to donate to help his flailing legal defense.
In August, a Texas jury awarded two Sandy Hook parents who sued Jones nearly $50 million.

Whether Jones be a prophet OR a jerk and a fool, then so be it, whatever. It is immaterial. We are free to decide. But he has a right to free speech. Jerks and fools will eventually lose their audience. But this case is living proof that in the good old USA anybody can sue ANYbody for any old cock-a-mamie reason and get away with it. The fact that they succeed in such a case is deeply disturbing, for it tolls the death knell for freedom of speech.
