CNBC Axes Shepard Smith’s Primetime Show

-

Former anchor-turned- host 's show is coming to an end.

Owing to its lackluster ratings, CNBC executives have decided to cancel Smith's 7:00 p.m. (ET) program, “The News with Shepard Smith,” a development first reported by Variety. The costly bet that viewers would watch Smith deliver a 7 p.m. news program on the business network never paid off in the ratings. Now, Variety reports the network's new chief sent out a memo laying out his vision for the network to return to business news.

KC Sullivan, who replaced Mark Hoffman, as the head of CNBC earlier in the year made clear he wants the network to focus on business news.

Sullivan sent a memo to staffers saying the network will now “prioritize and focus on our core strengths of business news and personal finance. This is key in our efforts to continue building on our position as the number one global business news brand and to connect with new audiences of all kinds interested in their financial future.”

“We need to further invest in business news content that provides our audiences actionable understanding of the complex developments in global markets and the implications on institutions, investors and individuals. During times of flux and uncertainty, our place in the lives of those we touch on-air, online and in person becomes even clearer, and more essential,” he added.

CNBC's future plans build on the network's status as a leader in business news. Permanent anchors for the coveted time slot have yet to be chosen.

Before arriving at CNBC, Smith had a 23-year career with Fox News Channel. Towards the end of his time at the network, Smith incurred the wrath of former President , who considered Smith's coverage of his administration unfair. (RELATED: Fox News Host Snaps at Longtime Trump Advisor)

  1. When I first read the headline my first guess was that Shepard had caught a fatal case of monkey pox, but getting fired is good news too. Monkey pox is still a very real possibility with his chosen lifestyle.

  2. Even with dismal ratings, cnbc refuses to air news that people are interested in hearing, instead of the liberal talking point propaganda they dispense.
They will switch to all business rather than speak the truth

    • Let’s see what lies they can get away with concerning business news. That’s going to take some really fancy foot work for them to blame Trump, Republicans ect for this screwed up economy the left and especially Slow Joe and his term has caused.
      fact check that Snopes!

  3. Cancelling Shep “I can see bodies floating by my hotel” Smith should have never been necessary if CNBC had hired someone who actually knew something about business.

  4. I am sorry to see Shepherd Smith’s program being cancelled. His show is/was professional and pretty much just the news. It was good to see a news program without talking heads offering their opinions rather than letting t he viewer just absorb the facts. And for the record, my husband and I often watch Fox News, but we switched to Shep at 7 p.m. because of his format.
