On Monday night, Jimmy Kimmel delivered an emotional opening monologue about the devastating wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles. As a native of the city, Kimmel spoke passionately about how the fires have impacted his life and the city at large, offering gratitude for the bravery of firefighters and first responders.
In a tear-filled return to his show, Kimmel shared how unsettling it had been to watch the fires threaten the city, where he lives and works. “It has been a very scary, very stressful, very strange week here in L.A.,” he said, adding that his studio had to evacuate on Wednesday. Amid the emotional chaos, Kimmel also pointed to the silver lining of the tragedy, emphasizing the community’s collective resilience, with residents helping those who had lost their homes.
Kimmel’s monologue, while moving and full of gratitude toward the emergency responders, notably omitted any discussion of the structural challenges that may have played a part in the city’s vulnerability. Instead of addressing these concerns, Kimmel took the opportunity to blast President-elect Donald Trump.
“I don’t want to get into all the vile and irresponsible and stupid things our alleged future president and his gaggle of scumbags chose to say during our darkest and most terrifying hour. The fact that they chose to attack our firefighters, who apparently aren’t white enough to be out there risking their lives on our behalf, it’s disgusting but it’s not surprising.”
This is, of course, a mischaracterization of Trump’s comments, who placed blame on state and local leadership for a multitude of decisions that interfered with the department’s ability to fight the fire.
“Instead, I want to focus on thanking those men and women. Our firefighters from L.A. were the first on the scene, without hesitation. They were out there putting out the fires as best they could.”
However, while his monologue focused on the unity brought by the tragedy and the heroism of those involved in the recovery, Kimmel seemed to gloss over one crucial factor that contributed to the devastation: the Los Angeles Fire Department’s focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, which may have played a role in the city’s underpreparedness for the disaster.
In recent years, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) has made a significant push to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion within its ranks. The implementation of these policies in the LAFD appears to have come at a cost. According to multiple reports, a shift in recruitment priorities—specifically emphasizing gender and racial quotas—has led to staffing shortages and operational inefficiencies that may have hindered the department’s preparedness for the fire season.
The LAFD’s response to the fires was undoubtedly commendable in many ways, but questions remain about whether the department was fully equipped—both in terms of personnel and resources—to handle such an enormous crisis. Were staffing shortages a factor that contributed to the slow response in some areas? Were there enough experienced firefighters available to make key decisions on the ground?

The fires are a tragedy. J. Kimmel, on the other hand, is a travesty. I do not deny him his right to express his emotional opinions. But, he is a grown man who will cry at the drop of a hat or a drip from the faucet. He acts as though these horrendous events are a personal vendetta against him. There are thousands of victims in California. And unfortunately, the Governor and the Carp are partially to blame. Jimmy blames the Republicans for every single adverse issue including his ingrown toenail. What must it be like to be in a constant state of unhappiness? I don’t know but I pity him. And, I certainly have no use for the narcissistic dingleberry..
I very much agree with your post. I don’t know if Jimmy will ever wake up and smell the roses (or for that matter any disgruntled democrat).
I agree with your post.
Kimmel is a predictable, unfunny, boring douchebag.
Another post I very much agree with.
