CBS Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan made headlines over the weekend after making a statement during a heated exchange with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Brennan claimed that Nazi Germany “weaponized free speech” to carry out the Holocaust, an assertion that many commentators quickly labeled as historically inaccurate and deeply problematic.
The controversial moment occurred during a discussion of Vice President JD Vance’s recent speech at the Munich Security Conference. Vance criticized European allies for adopting a “Soviet”-style approach to censorship, prompting Brennan to remark, “Well, he was standing in a country where free speech was weaponized to conduct a genocide.”
She started off with a pointed question,” I want to ask you about what happened in Munich, Germany, at the Security Conference. Vice President Vance gave a speech, and he told U.S. allies that the threat he worries about the most is not Russia, it is not China. He called it the “threat from within,” and he lectured about what he described as censorship, mainly focusing, though, on including more views from the right. He also met with the leader of a far-right party known as the AfD, which, as you know, is under investigation and monitoring by German intelligence because of extremism. What did all of this accomplish, other than irritating our allies?”
Brennan went on to suggest that the context of Vance’s speech—his meeting with the head of a political party with far-right views—was crucial to understanding the implications of the conversation. However, her comment about free speech playing a role in the Holocaust quickly drew condemnation.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio immediately disagreed with Brennan’s assessment, correcting her on the historical facts. “No, free speech was not used to conduct a genocide,” Rubio stated. He further clarified that there was no free speech in Nazi Germany, noting that the Nazi party was the only political force in power and that dissent was entirely suppressed.
Despite Rubio’s efforts to set the record straight, Brennan appeared to double down, making her statement even more controversial. The exchange quickly went viral, with many viewers taking to social media to criticize Brennan’s comments as a glaring distortion.
Conservative activist Robby Starbuck tweeted, “Wow. Margaret Brennan ACTUALLY claims that the Holocaust happened because ‘free speech was weaponized’ in Nazi Germany. She’s incredibly dumb, a blatant Democrat propagandist or both. Doesn’t really matter which it is, @CBSNews should fire her over this.”
Author Hans Mahncke also weighed in, stating, “Anyone claiming ‘free speech was weaponized to conduct a genocide’ in Nazi Germany is either profoundly ignorant or deliberately lying. The Nazis didn’t ‘weaponize’ free speech, they abolished it. No one pushing nonsense like this should be allowed anywhere near a newsroom.”
The Federalist CEO Sean Davis quipped, “Welp. I guess that means Trump needs to shut down CBS to prevent another Holocaust. Not the path I would’ve chosen, but if Margaret Brennan says that allowing CBS to just say whatever it wants will lead to another Holocaust, who am I to argue? Better to be safe and shut down CBS than be sorry you let CBS bring Hitler back.”
In the wake of the viral backlash, CBS News faces pressure to address the controversy and ensure its anchors are held to a higher standard of factual accuracy.
This contentious exchange comes just weeks after Brennan clashed with Vice President JD Vance in another heated interview, further stoking tensions between the CBS host and the administration. The interview was widely seen as combative and hostile, with critics accusing Brennan of attempting to frame Vance as inconsistent or hypocritical. Her continuation of the antics has only fueled the perception of Brennan as more interested in ideological confrontation than in facilitating genuine discussion.

I pray for true journalism to return, as well as fact checking on such situations. Good reporting, Seijah Drake! My son will be in the Miami area later this week. He wishes he could meet with some of the truth-seekers there!
No wonder the Millennials are so F****D up. considering the BULLSHIT they hear from supposed well-informed talking heads who make oh SO MUCH MONEY spewing LIES and MISINFORMAION
You can’t make this up. Do not hold your breathe waiting for CBS to fire Brennan. She did exactly what CBS wanted to do. I always wonder why Rubio goes on her
show, but then I realize its more to point out her lack of education on an issue of such violence and hatred that took place in Germany under Hitler.
The woman has a BA in foreign affairs and Middle Eastern studies. She started her alleged news reporting career with CNBC. But, she is not a journalist and should never bbe referred to as such. And, she somehow misinterpreted her education of history. She appears to be of the misandrist entitled narcissistic generation of women, whiich would validate her interview techniques. However, this is not the administration of 43-44 or 46. This is the administration of 47 and staff who are intelligent and will answer accordingly, correcting and embarrassing the interviewer without hesitation.
This kind of historical revisionist insanity has to be snuffed out immediately & completely. Unfortunately it has become the norm for the left.
Wow! This Margaret Brennan character needs to be removed from the media immediately and read the riot act……in jail. This steps the line over into criminal behavior.

Speech was free for the nacees but not for anyone else. Does that make it free speech Margaret?
