Newsmax Settles With Dominion Over 2020 Election Claims

Newsmax has reportedly agreed to pay a $67 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems over its coverage of 2020 election claims.

The settlement reads that “parties agreed to resolve the lawsuit among them for a total amount of $67 million to be paid in the current and next two fiscal years. The payments will be made in three installments: (1) $27 million paid on August 15, 2025; (2) $20 million on or before January 15, 2026; and (3) $20 million on or before January 15, 2027.” No additional details regarding the settlement were provided in the initial documents.”

Newsmax soon after released a defiant statement on its website, saying, “Newsmax believed it was critically important for the American people to hear both sides of the election disputes that arose in 2020. We stand by our coverage as fair, balanced, and conducted within professional standards of journalism.” The statement was included in an article on the settlement, which added:

Despite its confidence in its reporting, Newsmax determined the Delaware Court with Judge Eric Davis presiding over the case would not provide a fair trial wherein the company could present standard libel defenses to a jury.

Judge Davis also presided over the case of Dominion vs. Fox News where he was harshly criticized by then Fox’s chief legal officer for his actions and rulings.

Fox News, a much larger outlet than Newsmax, settled a similar lawsuit in April 2023 with the Denver-based electronic voting systems company for a whopping $787.5 million. (RELATED: Fox News Reaches Last-Minute Settlement With Dominion Voting Systems)

In a statement, Fox News Media said the network was “pleased” to reach a settlement and that it acknowledged “the Court’s rulings finding certain claims about Dominion to be false.”

Dominion Voting Systems filed a $1.6 billion lawsuit in 2021 following the presidential election. The company argues Fox News‘ airing of claims of voter fraud propagated by former President Donald Trump and his allies defamed the company and caused irreparable damage to its credibility.

Fox had fiercely defended itself on First Amendment grounds and has argued the network was covering the allegations being made by the then-President because they were newsworthy.
