Report: Gaetz Vows To Move To Remove McCarthy This Week

-

Tensions between have hit an all-time high…

On Sunday, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) told 's Jake Tapper that he plans to move to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his post later this week.

The move is the result of months of tense back-and-forth between the two Republicans. Gaetz, a hardline conservative, originally refused to support McCarthy's bid for Speaker in January.

One of the concessions McCarthy agreed to in January lowered the threshold for filing a so-called motion to vacate — a move to evict the speaker — to one House member.

“I do intend to file a motion to vacate against Speaker McCarthy this week,” Gaetz (R-Fla) said. “I think we need to rip off the band aid. I think we need to move on with new leadership that can be trustworthy.”

“Speaker Mccarthy made an agreement with House conservatives in January, and since then he has been in brazen, repeated material breach of that agreement,” Gaetz said Sunday. “This agreement that he made with Democrats, to really blow past a lot of the spending guardrails we had set up, is a last straw.”

In a last-minute bid to avoid a government shutdown, McCarthy called up a bill Saturday that abandoned the spending cuts and border policies being pushed by more conservative House members. The 45-day stopgap will keep the government open as House members continue to hash out full-year spending bills.

McCarthy's pivot to a bill that was backed by more Democrats than Republicans came as a surprise; He had previously likened a vote on such a clean funding bill to surrender.

“If somebody wants to remove [me] because I want to be the adult in the room, go ahead and try,” McCarthy said Saturday. “If I have to risk my job for standing up for the American public, I will do that.”

  1. This “kid” needs to grow up and learn some manners & how to Help is own party. This call to remove the Speaker is childish – he does not understand the job of the Speaker which is Negotiator not Controller like Pelosi was. Gaetz is doing a good job on issues but he’s really out of order here. And fighting in public with your own party only makes the Dems look better !
