Morning Brief: Death Of A Diplomat, Inflation Increases & Defeated Democrat

Good morning.

A mysterious death involving an American diplomat in Myanmar is drawing international attention, inflation is moving in the wrong direction again, and Rep. Jasmine Crockett is facing backlash over comments she made following the conviction of Texas teen killer Karmelo Anthony.

American Diplomat Found Dead in Myanmar

A Thai woman has been arrested in connection with the death of an American diplomat whose body was discovered at a hotel in Yangon, Myanmar, according to diplomatic sources and multiple reports.

The State Department confirmed the death of an employee of the United States government assigned to the embassy in Yangon but has released few details, citing privacy concerns. Authorities reportedly found the diplomat at the Sakura Residence & Hotel, a property frequently used by diplomats and foreign visitors located near the U.S. Embassy.

Myanmar authorities are treating the case as a possible homicide, though officials have not publicly identified the victim, disclosed a cause of death, or explained why the Thai woman was detained. Thailand’s Foreign Ministry confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the woman and has notified her family.

The investigation unfolds against a backdrop of ongoing instability in Myanmar, where the military junta that seized power in 2021 continues to restrict information and limit press access. For now, key questions remain unanswered as authorities in both countries remain largely silent.

Inflation Picks Up Speed Again

Inflation accelerated in May, reaching its highest level in three years and renewing concerns about the cost of living for American households.

Consumer prices rose 4.2% compared to a year ago, up from 3.8% in April and marking the third straight month of increasing inflation. The primary driver was energy, particularly gasoline prices, which surged amid tensions in the Middle East and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The national average price for regular gasoline climbed to roughly $4.15 per gallon in May—about a dollar higher than a year earlier. Higher fuel costs quickly spread through the broader economy, pushing up transportation expenses, shipping costs, airline fares, and prices for everyday goods.

Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, also remained elevated at 2.9%, suggesting inflationary pressures are extending beyond fuel prices alone.

The report complicates the Federal Reserve’s outlook. Earlier expectations of interest rate cuts later this year have faded as policymakers confront stubborn inflation that remains well above the central bank’s 2% target.

The latest numbers also create a political challenge for President Trump and congressional Republicans as voters continue feeling pressure from rising prices at the gas pump and grocery store heading into the 2026 midterms.

Crockett Faces Backlash Over Karmelo Anthony Comments

Rep. Jasmine Crockett is drawing criticism after remarks she made about convicted murderer Karmelo Anthony during a recent podcast appearance.

Anthony was convicted Tuesday and sentenced to 35 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. Jurors rejected Anthony’s self-defense argument and found him guilty of first-degree murder.

During her podcast, Crockett appeared sympathetic to Anthony’s claims and questioned aspects of the prosecution’s case. Critics argue she mischaracterized key facts presented during the trial and minimized the killing of Metcalf, whose death became one of the most closely followed criminal cases in Texas over the past year.

The backlash intensified because Crockett’s comments came less than a day after Metcalf’s family delivered emotional victim-impact statements at sentencing.

Many accused the Texas Democrat of portraying the convicted killer as a victim while downplaying the evidence that led jurors to convict him. As of Tuesday evening, Crockett had not publicly clarified or retracted her remarks.
