The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a war powers resolution aimed at ending unauthorized U.S. military involvement in Iran, marking the most significant congressional challenge yet to President Donald Trump’s handling of the conflict.

The measure, sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) invokes the 1973 War Powers Resolution and would require the administration to obtain explicit authorization from Congress before continuing hostilities against Iran, except in cases involving an imminent threat to the United States. The vote followed months of growing bipartisan concern over a conflict that began in.

As the country eased into the holiday stretch, a trio of dramatic developments — from a foiled terror plot in Los Angeles, to a shocking Hollywood tragedy, to a geopolitical shift in Europe

Federal Agents Foil Coordinated New Year’s Eve Bomb Plot

Federal law enforcement officials revealed over the weekend that they successfully disrupted what they describe as a credible, coordinated terrorist threat targeting Los Angeles. Four alleged members of a radical pro-Palestinian extremist faction — an offshoot of the Turtle Island Liberation Front (TILF) — were arrested as they prepared to test improvised explosive devices in the Lucerne Valley.

Investigators say the group planned synchronized attacks at five sites across the Los Angeles area on New Year’s Eve. A fifth individual allegedly tied to the same extremist network was arrested in New Orleans in connection with a separate planned attack.

The group’s ideology, as reflected in its social media footprint, blends pro-Palestinian activism with anti-government and anti-law-enforcement messaging. One post declared, “Free Palestine. Free Hawaii. Free Puerto Rico,” and framed the United States as an “illegal American empire.”

These arrests are part of a wider pattern of pre-emptive counterterrorism operations carried out under President Donald Trump’s second administration. In recent months, the FBI has reportedly thwarted ISIS-inspired plots and disrupted multiple attempts by individuals seeking to provide material support to foreign terrorist organizations. Republican leaders have emphasized these developments as evidence of the need for aggressive law-enforcement posture and strict border controls.

As Americans prepare to celebrate the holiday season, federal officials say their counterterrorism efforts will continue at heightened intensity to ensure safety in public spaces.

Hollywood Rocked by Murder of Rob Reiner and Wife; Son Arrested

In a separate and shocking development Sunday afternoon, Los Angeles police arrested Nick Reiner, the son of acclaimed filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner, in connection with the stabbing deaths of his parents at their Brentwood home. Authorities say the couple was found with their throats slit; Nick Reiner is now being held on $4 million bail.

The news prompted an immediate — and controversial — response from President Trump, who used his social media platform to frame the killings through the lens of what he has often called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” In a post, Trump described Reiner as “tortured and struggling” and suggested that his political criticism had “driven people crazy,” while offering condolences that struck many as sharply political in tone.

The investigation into the homicides is ongoing.

Zelensky Signals Major Shift: Ukraine Ready to Drop NATO Ambition

Meanwhile in Brussels, a seismic shift in the two-and-a-half-year-old war in Ukraine may be emerging. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Sunday that Kyiv is prepared to abandon its longstanding goal of joining NATO — a goal Russia has long cited as a justification for its invasion.

Zelensky made the statement ahead of marathon talks with President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, part of U.S.-supported negotiations hosted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The discussions, which stretched more than five hours, are aimed at shaping a possible path to peace.

Calling NATO membership an “ambition” that several Western partners were never fully prepared to support, Zelensky said Ukraine would instead seek bilateral “Article 5–like” security guarantees from the United States, as well as commitments from European allies, Canada, and Japan. He acknowledged the move as a significant concession — one intended to prevent future Russian aggression even if it falls short of the alliance framework Ukraine originally sought.

The shift also aligns with one of Moscow’s central demands and raises questions among analysts about the direction of the talks and the extent of U.S. influence over their tone. Those familiar with Trump’s diplomatic approach describe his style as intentionally competitive: “He kind of likes people competing against each other,” one source said. “He thinks it makes the product better.”
