Morning Brief: Tankers Hit In Hormuz, White House Terror Probe Expands, Andrew Gillum Arrested

Good morning.

The Middle East remains on edge after two commercial tankers were struck while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, federal investigators have announced another arrest in the alleged plot to attack a UFC event at the White House, and former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is back in legal trouble after being arrested on drug-related charges in Alabama.

Two Tankers Struck in Strait of Hormuz as Regional Tensions Rise

Turmoil returned to one of the world’s most important shipping routes Tuesday after two commercial vessels were damaged while traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), one tanker caught fire after being struck on its port side while heading toward the Gulf of Oman. A second vessel also sustained damage, though authorities said no injuries were immediately reported aboard either ship.

Qatar identified one of the vessels as the liquefied natural gas tanker Al Rekayyat and publicly blamed Iran for the attack, calling it a violation of international law and a threat to global energy security. Reuters reported the vessel transmitted distress signals after a projectile struck near its engine room.

The second ship, believed to be the Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker Wedyan, also suffered damage under circumstances that remain under investigation.

The incident comes as tensions over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz continue to mount. The narrow waterway carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, making any disruption significant for global energy markets.

The attacks also coincided with funeral ceremonies across Iran honoring Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, adding another layer of uncertainty as the region navigates a fragile diplomatic and military landscape.

White House Terror Investigation Nets Another Arrest

Federal prosecutors have announced another arrest in the ongoing investigation into an alleged plot to attack a UFC event held at the White House earlier this summer.

The Justice Department says 20-year-old Alexander Iniguez Mercado of Chicago has been charged with obstruction of justice after allegedly deleting encrypted Signal messages connected to the investigation.

According to prosecutors, Mercado served as an administrator in Signal group chats where participants reportedly discussed plans for a violent attack targeting the June 14 UFC event attended by President Donald Trump, government officials, athletes and thousands of spectators.

Court documents allege that an FBI agent contacted Mercado by phone the day before the event to question him about online threats. Investigators say Mercado denied any involvement and declined to meet with agents before uninstalling the Signal application, causing relevant communications to disappear from his phone.

Mercado now joins seven other individuals charged in connection with the broader investigation into what authorities describe as a planned domestic terror attack involving multiple suspects across several states.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

Federal prosecutors emphasized that the investigation remains active as authorities continue reviewing digital evidence and pursuing additional leads.

Andrew Gillum Arrested on Drug Charges in Alabama

Former Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum was arrested last week in Alabama, marking another legal setback for the former political rising star.

Online jail records show Gillum was booked Thursday evening in Baldwin County on misdemeanor charges of possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.

Authorities have released few details about what led to the arrest, and local police have not publicly described the evidence supporting the charges or identified the specific drugs involved.

The arrest is the latest chapter in a series of personal and legal troubles that have followed Gillum since his narrow loss to Republican Ron DeSantis in Florida’s 2018 gubernatorial election.

Gillum previously made national headlines in 2020 after police responded to a Miami Beach hotel room where another man was believed to have suffered an overdose. Officers discovered methamphetamine inside the room, but prosecutors ultimately declined to bring charges, saying there was insufficient evidence to establish possession.

For now, officials have not indicated whether additional charges could follow, and the case remains pending.
