A California truck driver who entered the country illegally has been sentenced after causing a crash that killed three people, leading gun-rights organizations are challenging the Trump Justice Department’s defense of federal firearms restrictions, and Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, have welcomed a new baby boy to the second family.
Illegal Immigrant Truck Driver Sentenced After Fatal California Crash
An Indian national who caused an eight-vehicle crash that killed three people in Ontario, California, has been sentenced to four years and eight months in prison.
Jashanpreet Singh was convicted on three counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence stemming from the October 2025 collision. Four other people were injured.
California Highway Patrol investigators said traffic had slowed ahead of Singh’s tractor-trailer, but he continued traveling at speed and drove directly into the vehicles in front of him. Dashcam footage showed the truck making no apparent attempt to stop or avoid the traffic before the collision.
Toxicology testing later confirmed Singh was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Prosecutors nevertheless argued his conduct amounted to gross negligence and that the crash was entirely preventable.
The case also became part of the broader immigration debate after federal officials confirmed Singh entered the United States through the southern border in 2022 and was released into the country under the Biden administration.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Singh, allowing the agency to take custody of him for possible deportation after he completes his prison sentence.
Gun-Rights Groups Challenge Trump Administration Over NFA Prosecution
Several major Second Amendment organizations are challenging the Trump administration’s continued enforcement of the National Firearms Act, arguing the federal government is defending restrictions that violate the Constitution.
The National Rifle Association, Second Amendment Foundation, Firearms Policy Coalition and American Suppressor Association filed a brief Monday in a federal appeals case involving Christopher Machamer, who was charged with unlawfully manufacturing short-barreled rifles.
The groups argue short-barreled rifles are protected by the Second Amendment because they are commonly owned and are not unusually dangerous. More than 1.1 million are lawfully registered nationwide, and they are legal to possess in most states.
Their brief also challenges the NFA’s registration system, contending it operates less as a public-safety measure and more as a barrier intended to discourage lawful firearm ownership.
President Trump signed legislation last year eliminating the federal tax on suppressors and short-barreled firearms, but the Justice Department continues defending the NFA’s registration requirements in court.
Administration officials argue the Justice Department generally has an obligation to defend existing federal laws unless Congress changes them. Gun groups say they remain broadly supportive of Trump while reserving the right to challenge his administration when they believe federal law conflicts with the Constitution.
JD and Usha Vance Welcome Baby Boy
Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance announced Sunday that they have welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance.
According to the Associated Press, Alec is the first child born to a sitting United States vice president in more than 150 years.
“Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” Vance wrote in a social media announcement.
The vice president also thanked the doctors and staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit for caring for his family.
Alec joins older siblings Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel.
The Vances met while attending Yale Law School and previously lived in Cincinnati before moving to Washington following the 2024 election.
