Good morning.
President Donald Trump is asking the Supreme Court to revisit its decision striking down his birthright citizenship order, another prominent Mississippi Democrat has pleaded guilty in a widening federal corruption probe, and Mexico is escalating its response after one of its nationals was fatally shot during an ICE enforcement operation in Texas.
Trump Asks Supreme Court to Rehear Birthright Citizenship Case
President Donald Trump is taking another shot at one of his signature immigration policies, announcing that his administration will ask the United States Supreme Court to rehear its recent decision blocking his executive order on birthright citizenship.
The dispute stems from Trump v. Barbara, in which the Supreme Court ruled that federal agencies cannot deny citizenship to children born in the United States to illegal immigrants or certain temporary visa holders.
Some legal observers have noted that Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s dissent focused primarily on federal statute rather than the Constitution itself, leaving open broader legal questions that could be raised in future litigation.
Trump blasted the ruling on Truth Social, calling it “a miscarriage of justice” and arguing that birthright citizenship continues to encourage birth tourism.
“AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP IS NOT FOR SALE!” the president wrote, adding that his administration would seek an immediate rehearing despite the fact that such requests are rarely granted.
Another Mississippi Democrat Pleads Guilty in FBI Corruption Sting
The FBI’s sweeping public corruption investigation in Jackson, Mississippi, claimed another high-profile target this week after former Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba pleaded guilty to conspiracy involving bribery, wire fraud, and money laundering.
Lumumba’s plea comes just days after former Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens also admitted guilt and resigned from office, making them two of several Democratic officials now ensnared in the same federal investigation.
According to prosecutors, undercover FBI agents posed as real estate developers seeking assistance with a downtown Jackson development project. Authorities allege public officials accepted cash and campaign contributions in exchange for using their offices to help move the project forward.
Federal prosecutors say Owens accepted more than $115,000 from undercover agents and helped funnel more than $80,000 in bribe payments to Lumumba, former City Council President Aaron Banks, and former City Council Vice President Angelique Lee.
Lumumba had previously insisted the prosecution was politically motivated, but his guilty plea avoids a public trial that had been scheduled to begin within days.
The case has drawn additional attention because of Lumumba’s national profile among progressive activists and Owens’ campaign support from organizations backed by billionaire George Soros.
Sentencing hearings for Lumumba, Owens, and Banks are scheduled for October.
Mexico Pursues Legal Action After Fatal ICE Shooting
The Mexican has announced plans to take legal action after a Mexican national was fatally shot during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in Houston.
According to ICE, agents attempted to arrest 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on Tuesday when he tried to flee and used his vehicle to ram an officer. An ICE agent then opened fire. The FBI has opened an investigation into the shooting.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the incident, saying Salgado’s “only offense” was living and working in the United States illegally. She announced that Mexico intends to seek criminal accountability where possible, pursue civil litigation against companies operating ICE detention facilities, and argue that the deaths of several Mexican nationals during immigration enforcement operations constitute human rights violations.
Mexican officials acknowledged they cannot compel American prosecutors to bring criminal charges but said they intend to press the issue through legal and diplomatic channels.
Salgado’s family disputes ICE’s account, saying he may have mistaken agents in unmarked vehicles for criminals. They are calling for an independent investigation and the release of additional evidence, including body camera or surveillance footage.
The shooting has sparked protests in Houston.
