PLAQUEMINE, La. — Democrat Chasity Verret Martinez scored a decisive victory Saturday in the special election for Louisiana House District 60, defeating Republican Brad Daigle in a seat President Donald Trump carried three times.
Martinez won about 62% of the vote to Daigle’s 38%, securing an outright majority and avoiding a runoff. The result marked a sharp departure from the district’s recent presidential voting patterns and dealt a setback to Republicans who had viewed the race as a prime pickup opportunity.
A Vacant Seat in Shifting Political Terrain
District 60, which includes parts of Assumption and Iberville parishes, became vacant after former Rep. Chad Brown (D) resigned in November 2025 to serve as commissioner of the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control at the request of Republican Gov. Jeff Landry.
While the district has long elected Democrats at the local and state levels, Republicans have made steady gains in recent years. Trump defeated Democratic nominee Kamala Harris there by roughly 13 percentage points in 2024, fueling GOP optimism heading into the special election.
Republicans reportedly outspent Martinez by roughly 3-to-1, and party strategists framed the contest as a test of Republican strength in Trump-friendly territory.
Local Focus Proves Decisive
Despite the financial disadvantage, Martinez consolidated Democratic voters and maintained strong local support. Republicans struggled to translate the district’s presidential voting behavior into down-ballot success.
Martinez’s win represents an estimated 37-point swing from the district’s 2024 presidential results and highlights the lingering divide in parts of Louisiana between national and local voting patterns.
A former Iberville Parish councilwoman, Martinez centered her campaign on affordability, infrastructure, and quality-of-life issues. Her focus on local concerns — rather than national political themes — appeared to resonate in the low-turnout special election.
Parallel Result in Texas
A similar dynamic emerged over the weekend in Texas, where Democrat Na’Cole Thompson won a special mayoral election in Leander, a fast-growing suburb north of Austin.
Thompson captured 57.1% of the vote in a nonpartisan race against two Republican candidates. Turnout was modest, with about 5,915 ballots cast out of 53,766 registered voters — less than 11%.
Leander is in Trump-leaning Williamson County, which Trump carried by roughly 13 points in 2024, and is generally described as a Trump-plus-4 city (51% to 47%).
Like Martinez, Thompson ran on community-focused priorities typical of municipal races, reinforcing the pattern of local issues outweighing national politics in down-ballot contests.
Nonetheless, the takeaway is becoming harder for Republicans to ignore: Trump-won territory is no guarantee of winning down-ballot races. These contests underscore a persistent GOP problem — national momentum doesn’t always carry through to local elections — a salient lesson as the party defends razor-thin margins in both the House and a closely contested Senate.
