Arizona Democratic Sen. Ruben Gallego is launching an effort to challenge a new Trump Administration immigration policy that could require many green card applicants to leave the United States and complete the process abroad.

According to a report from The Hill, Gallego is not only seeking to overturn the policy itself but is also pursuing a procedural strategy that could make it easier for Congress to reverse the change.

The dispute revolves around a recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) policy affecting how certain immigrants obtain lawful permanent residency.

President Donald Trump’s administration has mobilized the D.C. National Guard and placed the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) under temporary federal control in an effort to address what the White House has described as a “breakdown in law and order” in the nation’s capital. The plan, announced during a joint press conference with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, has drawn sharp criticism from several high-profile Democrats.

Trump invoked Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, giving the federal government direct control over local law enforcement in the city. According to Hegseth, the D.C. National Guard is now under operational authority of Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll. Trump also directed several federal law enforcement agencies—including the FBI, DEA, ATF, ICE, and U.S. Park Police—to deploy additional units to patrol D.C. streets over a seven-day period.

The action follows a recent assault on Edward Coristine, a prominent DOGE worker known online as “Big Balls,” which drew public attention to rising concerns about street violence in the District. In the aftermath of the attack, President Trump issued a warning to city officials, demanding they take control of the situation or face federal intervention.

Critics of the decision have accused Trump of overreach and “political theater.”

Maryland Governor Wes Moore claimed the mobilization “lacks seriousness and is deeply dangerous,” adding that Trump was “using honorable men and women as pawns to distract from his policies.” Moore also argued the move lacked both strategic planning and justification based on crime data, despite D.C.’s comparably high murder rate.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi accused Trump of hypocrisy, referencing his handling of the January 6. “Donald Trump delayed deploying the National Guard on January 6th… Now, he’s activating the DC Guard to distract from his incompetent mishandling of tariffs, health care, education, and immigration,” Pelosi wrote on X. Readers should note that her account of events has been disputed.

Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD) went a step further, suggesting the mobilization was politically motivated. “Crime is down in D.C.,” Ivey claimed, labeling the move “a desperate attempt to distract from the Epstein files and yet another unprecedented and dangerous misuse of our military.”

In the aftermath of the January 6 riot, thousands of National Guard troops were stationed in Washington, D.C., for weeks. Many were photographed waiting in parking garages and other makeshift rest areas near the Capitol complex, long after the immediate threat had passed. The extended presence drew criticism from across the political spectrum, raising questions about mission clarity and the treatment of service members tasked with domestic security roles.

Now, D.C. residents are organizing protests and demonstrations in opposition to the federal intervention. While some view the response as an overreach, others see a city leadership prioritizing ideology over addressing public safety. To many observers, the backlash from D.C. Democrats appears more rooted in political animosity than in sound policy objections—raising concerns that partisan resistance may be standing in the way of restoring order and making the capital safer for everyone.

Despite the backlash, administration officials argue the move is warranted due to persistent threats to public safety and a lack of leadership at the local level. The federal response marks one of the most assertive uses of presidential authority in domestic law enforcement in recent years.

As D.C. enters a period of heightened federal oversight, the mobilization is likely to remain a point of contention in ongoing debates over public safety, law enforcement, and executive power. The administration has not specified how long the National Guard and federal agencies will remain active in the city, but officials have hinted that future extensions are on the table if conditions do not improve.

What in hell is wrong with today’s democrats? They hate America so much they fight every effort to make it safer or cleaner. They should join with Trump to make our capital city something to be proud of instead of just another shithole ghetto run into the ground by liberal democrats.

    Granny

Washington D.C. is federal land. President Trump has every right to use federal law enforcement to contain the crime. It never should have been under a local jurisdiction in the first place.

Of course Democrats don’t like it. They don’t like that he’s breathing.
