Election Prognosticator Shifts ‘Toss Up’ Senate Race Towards Democrats

A prominent nonpartisan election analyst has upgraded Sen. Jon Ossoff’s (D-Ga.) 2026 reelection race from a “toss-up” to “leans Democratic,” but even the analyst acknowledges the contest is likely to remain highly competitive in a state that narrowly backed Donald Trump in 2024.

Kyle Kondik, managing editor of Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, said the shift reflects Democrats’ recent success in Georgia Senate races during the 2020 and 2022 cycles. Kondik argued that Democrats “should be favored” to win again in 2026, particularly if Republicans fail to rally behind a strong nominee. Still, the analysis underscores that Ossoff faces a difficult path in one of the nation’s most closely divided swing states.

Kondik pointed to Sen. Raphael Warnock’s 2022 victory as evidence Democrats can win Georgia Senate races during midterm elections, even with a Democratic president in office. However, he also acknowledged that Warnock’s Republican opponent, Herschel Walker, was a uniquely flawed candidate.

“The GOP nominee probably won’t have Walker’s baggage but they also probably won’t have his name ID, either,” Kondik said.

Even with the rating upgrade, Kondik emphasized that Ossoff remains vulnerable. Georgia’s closely divided electorate, combined with questions about Democratic turnout, could still shape the outcome.

Among the key uncertainties, Kondik cited whether Ossoff can generate strong Black voter turnout in a midterm environment.

“This race is likely to be decided by only a few points either way — we just think Ossoff is likelier to end up on the winning side of that margin,” he added.

On the Republican side, the primary field remains unsettled. Ossoff is facing three GOP challengers: Reps. Buddy Carter and Mike Collins, as well as former University of Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley.

Dooley has secured the backing of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R), Carter has the ability to self-finance portions of his campaign, and early public polling suggests Collins currently holds a narrow lead. However, Collins’s campaign is also navigating a House Ethics Committee review tied to allegations involving his former chief of staff, an issue that could affect the race as it develops. Ossoff is the only Senate Democrat seeking reelection in a battleground state carried by Trump in 2024, making his seat a top Republican pickup target. While Democrats may currently benefit from GOP divisions, the May primary looms large.
